I've always found it very interesting that the stinky, crazy, homeless hippie musician was charismatic enough to convince a bunch of kids to go murder strangers. It's also very interesting to me that the state of California sentenced him to death for the murders of people that he never laid a finger on!
He was convicted of the first degree murders of other people besides the ones typically referenced when speaking of him and his tribe.

Nothing unusual. People convince others all the time to do something crazy. Look at Heavens Gate, they all were convinced to kill themselves. There has been many cults where someone convinces others. Hell how many college kids are convinced by another to drink way too much alcohol? Granted it's not murder but just saying there are circumstances and certain types of people that can be convinced to do anything.
