China BBQ ban plans stoke up anger Published: 21 Feb 2013 at 18.43Online news: Asia China web-users were furious Thursday over plans to tackle pollution with a ban on barbecues, wryly asking if Beijing would stamp out fried food and normal bodily functions in its war on smog. Street food vendors barbecue meat in Leshan, in China's southwestern Sichuan province, November 25, 2007. China web-users are furious over plans to tackle pollution with a ban on barbecues, wryly asking if Beijing would stamp out fried food and normal bodily functions in its war on smog. While many residents have grown tired of donning face-masks or having to stay indoors during prolonged bouts of heavy smog, China's food-loving public say forcing fire-grilled food off the streets is a step too far. "This is hilarious. What are they going to consider next? Banning fried food?" said one user on Weibo, China's version of Twitter. "What proportion of pollution comes from barbeques?" said another. "I wonder when the government will start banning breaking wind." The controversial measure is being explored as Beijing aims to confront the heavy pollution which has choked large swathes of the country in recent weeks. State media said Wednesday that the country's environmental watchdog had issued draft guidelines advising major cities to adopt legislation banning "barbecue-related activities". Much of China's pollution has been blamed on emissions from coal-burning and exhaust fumes from vehicles. Barbequed food is a favourite dish in China, particularly lamb skewers, a speciality of the north-western region of Xinjiang. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/asia/337082/china-bbq-ban-plans-stoke-up-anger ______________________

That would be taking out like 0.5% of the pollution there.

BBQ is extremely common in China.  In most cities you can find it on just about any given street corner. Vendors are easier to find than  hotdog stands in the U.S.

I've been to the Leshan buddha twice and gotten BBQ both times.  As with most street foods or meat on sticks, it was delicious.

But this is a stupid move.  THe pollution problem is caused by the unfettered manufacturers in the SEZs that have very little to no environmental regulations from the government.  The biggest output of pollution in China comes from the electricity producing coal burning, which again has minimal environmental constraints from the government.  The government knows this. THis is just a PR move IMO.

BBQ in China is awesome. Runs until 6am and you can eat all the chicken wings you want for under £3. I wouldn't be surprised if it contributes to pollution though because there must be hundreds of them in this city alone.

The Chinese need to look at other industrialized nations to see what they have done to curb emissions to help keep air clean. While we here in the States do have some cleaner burning coal (there are different grades of coal), we also have lots of scrubbers on our coal burning power plants so the amount of particular and smoke matter is much less than what it used to be during the beginning of the industrial age here. England also banned burning coal for heat a long time ago if memory serves me correctly.

i agree that this is a smart choice. nothing but good will come from this. i did the math and i have come to the conclusion that most of china's pollution will be cleared by the year 2019. also, population issues will also be addressed by this ban. this is nothing but a win for china and i strongly support their government filled with intelligent, warm-hearted men who like to solve problems, not create problems for absolutely no reason.

These images speak for themselves about the industrial revolution. The famous London Fog was mostly smog, at least in the Winter of 52.
