The Chinese government recently granted a settlement of $11,200 dollars to Feng Jianmei and her husband Deng Jiyuan after local government officials forcibly aborted Feng when she was seven months pregnant. Feng and Deng have one child, so when Feng got pregnant with a second child local family planning officials fined them 40,000 Yuan ($6,300) which they could not afford to pay. In May, local government officials, seized and blindfolded Feng and forced her to sign a paper "consenting" to the abortion, then they forcibly aborted her child by jamming a needle into its head while five men held Feng down.

Forced abortion under China's one child policy is not rare, but this case received widespread international attention after Feng's husband posted a pictures of Feng lying next to the dead baby (a lot of times after doing a forced abortion, Chinese family planning officials put the baby's body on the hospital bed next to the woman and leave it up to the woman and her family to pay for the child's burial) on Sina Weibo (China's version of twitter).

In addition to giving the settlement to Feng and Deng, the Chinese government has fired two local officials who were behind Feng's forced abortion and given minor punishments to five more officials. Disturbingly the Chinese government appears to be taking new steps to censor websites and Feng and Deng have reported that they have been harassed by supporters of the Communist party family planning officials (some of whom held banners outside of Feng's hospital room calling her a traitor) after they tried to bring attention to the violation of their rights via Feng's forced abortion.

Update (20 July 2012): on a related note, the story of Feng Jianmei has lead another forced abortion victim, Zhang Wen Fang, to come forth with her story. Zhang was 9 months pregnant in 2008 when eleven family planning officials abducted her, took her to a hospital and injected her with drugs that caused her to go into labor and pass out. When she awoke she asked the doctors about her baby but they refused to say whether it was alive or dead and she also found out that the hospital had removed her uterus, her cervix, her fallopian tubes and her right ovary. After all this, Zhang now has kidney damage and is confined to a wheel-chair, which has caused her to lose her business. After being beating by officials from the Family Planning Commission Zhang's husband left her.

I read the original story a few weeks ago and it really upset me to hear about it. I am pretty sure this isn't an isolated case, just one that has garnered some international attention. The idea of it just disgusts me. As for the compensation. Screw that. I don't think any amount of money will resolve the trauma that mother and her family must be going through.

Communism, isn't it great? China is a (#$#( country and I feel bad for the people who live there. I don't even know how they call themselves communists either when their entire industry revolves around capitalism and the distribution of wealth there is ginormous.

I think they enforce it with fines and communities reporting people who contravene the policy, with abortions for those that cannot pay the fine, however in this case, aborting a baby at 7 months is disgusting.

They don't call themselves communist anymore... You're like a decade late on that one... Anyway, this story does sound like a huge tragedy. I'm glad I don't live there.

The law is the law, it just so happens that it's Chinese law and isn't a very nice one, however it appears to be the only way to stop the population of the world getting out of hand and after a traumatic event such as this I bet they'll never ever have another baby so at it's most basic principle, the law worked. As the worlds most populated country they are desperate to find a way to stem the population and if the people won't take precautions then you're going to be pay and pay viciously. To be honest wish I never even read this article I can't stop thinking about it now, poor folks.

China has different cultural views concerning such things, their civil rights records is very poor.

She's lucky that her case generated enough public interest, otherwise the central government wound not have given a single sh1t about her case.

This is why it was a huge mistake to allow China the chance to become a world power. We used to hate communism and this is why. I prefer the days that we had no relations with countries like this. Certainly in the case of China, we'd have been better of that way if not just for the loss of all our manufacturing jobs. Instead of collapsing their economy so change can take place like we did with the USSR, we've been licking their balls and now they are so powerful we can't do a damn thing about it. Not to mention as a country the US lacks balls unlike what we had in the 80's. Yeah, maybe we'd get nuked by the ruskies but that was a price most were willing to pay for our principals.

I think the family accepted the compensation because they said they were getting harassed by supporters of the government. The family had originally went public in order to get justice and to ensure that this doesn't happen to other people (China is sensitive to international pressure because they feel it could effect their economy).

I think i've read that the USSR's collapse was partially due to its high abortion rates (I think in Russia back then and even today the abortion rate was higher than the birth rate), which (coupled with all the loss of life caused by World Wars I and II, various famines and Stalin's purges) lead to a massive population shortage.
