yo, i got a birthday card from my dad in the mail today, and i opened it up.  guess what.  it had 50 bucks in it.  so now, i am torn on what to do with it.  should i buy a game, some movies, or some CDs?  or should i put it in the bank considering i've only not spent a total of like $130-$175 over the last 18 years of my life.

Go wild and and send that money to your friendly Exxon or whatever oil company. I am sure they would appreciate taking your money.

Its only $50, no point saving it in a bank.  Personally, I'd hold on to it and just use it for whatever expenses I came across like food and cigarettes and such...but if you're not into that, just buy a game or something.

don't you think i should start actually saving my money though.  i mean, i'm graduating in 23 days.  i need some kind of financial security.  even if it's only $50.

If you really want some type of financial security, get a par time job or something.  Saving random amounts of money you get here and there won't get you far.  Might as well just have fun with it.

QFT, i even have a part time job and was thinking of investing, but people said that with the money i'll lose in the beginning there is no point. The stock would really need to soar in order to make any money, you need a lot of cash to invest or it's not worth it. You're better off spending it or saving it.

i actually just got a job on monday, so i will begin to have a paycheck to save every couple of weeks.  but the only bad part is, i onyl work for like 1-2 hours a day.  i was supposed to do some extra work this weekend at home, but i either forgot to grab it out of my car, which is now in another town until sunday, or it's somewhere around my house and i cna't find it.

If you want to invest in a stock, now is a good time since the stock market is doing very well and above 13,000 in volume. My IBM stock is doing really well, as well as my parent's IBM stock. I have about 620 shares and it closed just shy of 103 this weekend.

$50 is nothing once you have a job. I think about the $1000 plus I have in savings right now, and once I turn 16 and get a part time, I will be making nearly half of that every month. Enjoy it now, buy a game or something. If you are a senior in high school and $50 is still such a big deal that you have to ask strangers how to spend it, you need to work with money better.

well, i never really thought about saving money before.  i always did what you guys are saying to do, spend it.  i got money, i would buy a movie, a cd or a game.  don't you think eventually i need to stop wasting money on stuff that i hardly use, when i could save it for a car, or something like that?  not to mention the fact that almost all the people i know who have thousands of dollars saved up either got it from their parents (or other family members) over the years, or they get an allowance for doing chores and stuff like that.

i did chores, and i didn't make sh*t.  no one in my family put money away fro me when i was born like some people.  and, i live with one parent, so i have to save the money to help pay for stuff around the house.

so, i was asking if i should do the responsible thing and save, or if i should spend it all, and stay broke.

Saving is always good, and I would never say it isn't, but you have to realize that its just $50 that you got on your birthday. I made more than that at work today.  Its really a meaningless amount when you think about it.  Once you're making a steady income, then definitely save some of it.  Until then, though, you might as well just enjoy what you have.

i see where you're coming from, but i don't think that i can just enjoy it.  i have a movie collection of probably about two hundred movies.  you know what that says?  i try and make it look like i have money.  i probably am the main reason why we have less money than we should, because i am always buying stuff that's not important.
