And he will go on to be remembered as one of the best directors of all time. Seriously, I think the only reason people say they don't like him is because it's the "un-mainstream" thing to do. He makes provocative, brilliant, and utterly original films.

ManUtd4life096

Memento was adapted from his brothers short story

Insomnia was a remake of a Norwegian film

The Prestige was a Christopher Priest novel

Batman...no need to comment.

To be fair most of Kubrick's films were adaptations as well.

Nolan is easily one of the best new directors in the past 10 or so years but he's far from being one of the best of all time.

he wont be remembered as one of the best and he is nothing like kubrick. he's a great mainstream director though, but thats all his films are - mainstream, for the casuals. he doesnt make any meaningful work bar his first 2 films. he's much more speilberg/cameron than kubrick.

You're gonna get a lot of flame for this because of a bunch of people stuck in the past me-thinks. I am not saying Kubrick is worse than Nolan or Nolan is better, but the reaction you'll get is more like "Nolan is teh sucks" and they will try to downplay his mainstream success. I think if he continues making movies like he has done the past 10-12 years, for the next 20 or so years, he'll go down with the greats. As of yet though, he still has a lot of work to do. :)

Lol. I don't even like most of Kubrick's work and I find that assertion to be hilariously unfounded. Christopher Nolan is an amateur compared to Kubrick behind the camera. Kubrick was a genius at setting a scene, and using mere imagery to deliver a message, without a single line of dialogue. I'm almost disgusted you would put them in the same sentence, let alone think they are actually equally talented. Kubrick produced art... Nolan produces entertainment. F*ck, The Dark Knight is my favorite movie of all time and I still am reeling from such an asinine comparison.

I dunno, I think some of his films are overrated. As much as I liked Inception, I think people made it out to be more than it was. It was visually striking and well-directed, but in the end I think it was a more intelligent breed of summer blockbuster. TDK is probably also overrated, and TDKR is definitely overrated. Of course you might say the same about some of Kubrick's films, I think 2001 is definitely overrated, probably FMJ as well. I still don't think Nolan has done anything as good as Dr. Strangelove or Clockwork Orange, though.

The comparison isn't asinine - both make (made) films that are portentous and cynical and that contain an often clinical coldness.

Nolan has had some amazing films: Memento, Insomnia, Batman Series

Some good films: The Prestige...well one good film :P

And some bloody awful films: Inception, Following.

But, is he the greatest director of this generation? No. Lynch, Cronenberg, Tarantino (yeah, it's cool to hate tarantino now, but he makes amazing movies.), Aronofsky, Edgar Wright, Scorsese, Chan-wook Park, Joel Coen...

Also, I don't believe anyone is this generation's Kubrick...No one really has the same style of directing that he did, so it's truly an odd thing to claim.

Okay, called Inception and Following awful, stopped taking seriously.

Mentioned Tarantino, Edgar Wright, and David Cronenberg as some of the best of our generation, definitely stopped taking seriuosly.

Inception was awful. Ham-fisted crap. Unoriginal concept, I preferred the version Cronenberg did a decade before. It might have been good...if you know, it didn't scream "THIS IS THE POINT OF THE FILM GUYS, K????????" every 5 bloody seconds. As I mentioned, it's cool to hate Tarantino now. He still makes fantastic films. I defy you to name a director better than Cronenberg. There are a few who have made exceptional films, Julie Taymor made likely the greatest film of all time...but across the universe was bloody awful...

Also, I get it, the Batman trilogy is very popular, we aren't psuedo-hipster enough if we don't hate it :P

Okay, Kubrick. Or did you mean a more modern director? Coen, Scorcese, hell, I prefer Nolan to him. History of Violence was completely overrated, and Eastern Promises was good but nothing amazing. Crash, way overrated. The man is probably the second most overrated director after Tarantino. I like most of Tarantino's work, liked Resevoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and Inglorious Basterds, but they're still overrated. The man's a one-dimensional director. His best film to date has been Pulp Fiction, and he seems to have peaked there. Fantastic? That's a real stretch.

Oh, it's hipster to hate the Batman trilogy now? I remember when it was hipster to say TDK was the best movie of all time. Frankly, I don't rightly care about what's cool to hate and like, I form my own opinions of movies. The Batman movies were good, but nowhere near as good as people make them out to be. Amazing? Come on. Citizen Kane is amazing, North by Northwest is amazing, the Batman films are really only pretty good action movies. TDK may be one of the best action movies made, in fact, but it's still mostly an excuse to see big explosions, cool vehicles, and exciting fight scenes. If that's the criteria for amazing I could find dozens of films that qualify.

I hate to break it to you, but... it's called an opinion and you both got one. You seem to know that, yet take it so seriously that his is different. Quite odd. I don't see how it can seem bizarre for someone to make an argument for a movie you don't like to be good when it comes from a highly acclaimed director.

Hell no. I don't even know if there IS a "this generation's Kubrick", but one of my top picks for that role would be Paul Thomas Anderson (not the OTHER Paul Anderson, aka the Resident Evil guy). Particularly There Will Be Blood. Man, that TOTALLY seemed like Kubrick himself could have made it.

Paul Thomas Anderson is the closest this generation has to a Kubrick.

More to the point, none of his movies even remotely remind me of Kubrick in ANY kind of way. And don't get me wrong, I generally love Christopher Nolan's movies. But they're also not anywhere near Kubrick's league, and more to the point they just don't resemble a Kubrick film in any kind of way whatsoever.

Yeah...no one says you have to like Kubrick's movies, no one has to say that they are even GOOD. And it's not even about a direct comparison of the QUALITY of their movies. Like I said, I loved Kubrick's work and I love Nolan's work. I certainly agree that Nolan pales in comparison, but that's beside the point. The point, I think, is that these two directors were so VASTLY different in what they did that it's pretty silly to even make the comparison in the first place. Kubrick was first and foremost an artist, and Christopher Nolan is first and foremost a mainstream pop director. I love both their works, but by and large what they DID was so drastically different that it's weird to make the comparison in the first place. They aren't even trying to do the same thing. Comparing them is sort of like saying that Joel Peter Witkin is the new Ansel Adams. No. No, he isn't. And one can say that without even making a single comparison about the QUALITY of their work.

Kubrick was actually an insane genius, even though i only personally enjoy a few of his films. Nolan is just a great action director.

Because he made three good Batman movies, Nolan is suddenly the greatest of our generation, or something? No.

Good, but not amazing. Anyone who allows Christian Bale to have that absurd Batman voice loses a few points.

No. Kubric would never have lowered himself to a level where he was making Batman movies. What's next, Justin Bieber is the new Beethoven? Get real, that's just ridiculous.

No doubt. Thinking about it now, every Kubrick film not called Full Metal Jacket is better than anything Nolan has done. To even call him one of the best filmmakers working today would be quite a stretch.

Oh please no. I will be sorely disapointed if these pretentious hacks are remembered as the best of this generation.
