Recently, Google has announced a couple of interesting new features for its search engine designed to enrich the overall experience.

The first one is called "Search by Image" which allows Google Chrome and Firefox (extension is required) users to search by using an image.

All you have to do is drag and drop the picture into the search box and that's it, Google will figure out the rest (including location) and display somewhat relevant search results.FavBrowser

The above is only an excerpt. The source has videos!

The first feature seems pretty sweet. Sounds like a definite advantage that Google now has over Bing. What do you guys think?

So... if I drag and drop a picture of, say, Batman and name the picture pancake, will I get pictures of Batman or of a pancake?

No extension is needed if you are using Firefox trunk builds (don't know if it works in FF5 beta).

The definite advantage that Google has over Bing is that Google isn't terrible. Also Google is about to (or already has) shut down quite a few services. Some of which were use a lot (like Google translate), so I'm not going to pretend they're gods because they implemented another feature barely anybody will use.

So if I drag a picture of someone I'm stalking will it find where they live? Sounds creepy.

So it's a native feature in later builds of Firefox? Wouldn't the same apply to Chrome?

Doesn't Bing copy results from Google, thus making them equal? And damn, they are going to shut down Google Translate?

Im already annoyed that they remove the "define: " plug in (that was the thing i used the most on google!!) among other things, but to get rid of Translate is not a smart move.

I dont get why they cant keep all of these things and still implement new stuff (it not like theyre short of money, so server space is not an issue).

That said, it will take a lot to make me swap to Bing.

Edit: On topic, sure this new feature will be nice, but im not entirely sure how much ill use it, when i can just go and type "pancake" into google images rather than dragging in a picture of a pancake.

I wish Chrome would enhance my secure log in experience. Everytime I try to do online banking or something that requires me to log in securely it always has a problem. Other than that it's pretty good.

Let me be the first to state the obvious. This new feature will be used mostly for, "naughty" reasons.

No. They don't. Bing focused on fixing the weakness Google had when Bing first came out. Mainly, real-time search updates such as traffic, airline prices, airline schedules, restaurant menus, etc. However, for general searches, Bing seems to lack. I've never found what I was looking for using Bing faster than I did using Google.

I dont get why they cant keep all of these things and still implement new stuff (it not like theyre short of money, so server space is not an issue).

It costs money simply because they have to continue to support it. They have to find and fix bugs and what-not. They have to mold their website around the features. If only 1% of the users use some feature, then it simply isn't worth changing entire designs to make sure that feature stays.

yeah, now I won't have to use tineye to find those "actors" whose names I need to know

edit: I gave it a spin, it is not as effective as tineye, doesn't find stuff that tineye does, this may be because it works differenty, rather than searching for an identical image, or has certain sites filtered, but I rate it "meh" none the less

I have always found what I'm looking for using Google, Bing or Yahoo's algorithm just doesn't work for me. Googles algorithm is superior and that is why its better, of course this new feature helps.

It just came out, right? Give it some time and I am sure it will get better as this is something that Google can profit off of I'm sure.
