The CIA swears that it does not know whether rapper Tupac is alive and where he might be.

It also hasn't kept track of passwords that people may have forgotten, but it would be willing to take a picture with Ellen DeGeneres, if she visited CIA headquarters in Langley, Va.

Also, it’s hiring.

The humorous messages were part of a stream of Twitter posts on Monday marking the spy agency’s first month on the social media service. They come as a sign that it’s sticking with a tongue-in-cheek public posture rare for official government public relations outlets, especially ones as sober as the CIA.

Last month, the spy agency took the social network by storm with a joke about its notorious secrecy.

“We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet,” the agency tweeted, a message widely shared on the service.

At the same time, the agency launched its official Facebook page, which has proven to be a more conventional outlet for agency public relations messages and sharing historical anecdotes.

The twin moves were intended to make the covert agency more accessible to the public, though critics quickly chided it for making light of its lack of transparency.

According to the CIA, its messages on Monday were meant to answer the five “top questions” asked by the public, and quickly made the rounds online.

Within minutes of the Tupac tweet, for instance, the message — "No, we don't know where Tupac is" — was shared by Twitter users more than 10,000 times.

Twitter is genius and it's not hard to understand why so many people use it.

- Incredibly intuitive to use
- News aggregator - get all the stuff you care about in one place, easily
- If you're a business it's the best way to communicate with your audience/demographic
- Worldwide forum and discussion
- Great way to post content and build an audience for whatever you're into
- It's just fun

Yeah, I'm still not seeing the appeal. I've never used it and don't feel like I'm missing anything you mentioned.

I am still trying to figure out wtf the purpose of Twitter is. I seems like it is there so you can do two things and neither are things I care to do. I can either follow somebody and pretend I give a shit wtf they think, or I can be followed...I don't like being followed.

I once tried to use Twitter. I can't comment on any of those points considering the fact that I didn't get to use any of the site's functionality. I kept getting that floating whale photo telling me the servers are overloaded.

So I can comment on the technical aspect of the site: its utter shit.

It has crossed my mind actually. I mean yes its all fun and giggly but the man is dead there's nothing funny about death. He has family and friends who I suspect fail to see the humor in this.

Exactly. And I get that it is Twitter and that they are trying to engage different age groups, and make the CIA seem more society friendly and whatnot; however, it just tarnishes the CIA and it's image. They are attempting humor with the death of a person and this is coming from an organization that's supposed to be very serious when it comes to handling situations. It just feels wrong and inappropriate coming from the CIA.

It has nothing to do with the platform it was published on. That's irrelevant. The platform doesn't justify anything, it is still a statement at the end of the day. It comes down to our first line of defense making such irresponsible / juvenile comments.

He's probably in Lian Yu. But CIA might not have resources there, I think that's in Argus' jurisdiction. CIA is getting more powerful though, now that SHIELD has been disbanded and Nick Fury's supposedly dead (though I could swear I've seen him doing commercials for Capital One credit cards).

I suppose my problems with Twitter are

- Very little relevant or important news is posted to twitter, unless you're interested in what your favorite celebrity had for lunch, anything actually important posted to Twitter is much easier to find elsewhere
- It's an ad-machine. Twitter is more or less, one big advertisement. It's used for self-advertisement moreso than to spread genuinely useful or interesting information.
- Utterly Inefficient system for back and forth forum-type communication, only particularly useful for people trying to embarrass, slam, and gang up on other people.

I've never seen anything genuinely interesting posted to Twitter in my life, nor has anyone I've held respect for use Twitter anything more than easy advertisement. I'm still not sure how Twitter is so popular, I don't know a single soul who even uses it.

I'm no Tupac fan, but I agree that the tweet is sorta insensitive and part hurtful to not only his friends an family, but also the fans. I know the CIA didn't intent for that, but still.
