Since humans are animals seems to be all the rage, going with that. Does that technically make Circus Clowns Circus Animals? Call a clown that and see what happens.

This kind of gets at the fact that there are certain words whose technical definition is not in concert with their popular usage, much like "fruit", which is what lead a court to declare tomatoes a while back to be vegetables for the purposes of trade laws.

Technically? Yes, in that they are animals and are employed by a circus, but not in the popular usage of the word "circus animal".
