Both take talented to do properly and I enjoy songs that use a combination of both.

I like them both, but there needs to be a baleance between the two to a certain degree. Bands like KSE have found a pretty good middle ground I think. But then there are bands like Asking Alexandria that haven't. Simply put, there is a time and place for both in any given song.

Gee, good technique and proper musicianship, or utterly unintelligible crap that's going to completely wreck your vocal chords?

Tough choice.

My remarks have been corrected.

However, I still maintain that the singer sounds like he's constipated.

Mostly harsh

I don't think I've ever heard Slipknot use any harsh vocals before. But then again I don't listen to a lot of Slipknot.

They use plenty

I prefer clean(er) vocals, at least to a degree to where you can hear the lyrics. Harsher vocal are great when they mix fluently with the song, but hearing such screaming and growling on every song, all the time tends to gets rather grating.

Harsh vocals are appropiate for death metal and whatnot; however that doesn't mean that I'll enjoy a song for them, it just means that I enjoy the song because its sounds mesh well. When it comes down to vocal types that I would listen to a song for, I'll pick clean anyday.

I'd say closer to clean than harsh. Nu metal vocals aren't un-pleasant enough to fit harsh (and is more along the lines of shouting than grunting/shrieking).

Harsh vocals can be a lot more emotional than clean vocals, depending from the style.

Also I just love death growls.

Both are equally good depending on what I'm listening to. I don't want my death metal to be sung by a quartet of Japanese Idol's, nor do I want my poppy anime openings to have death growls/black metal shrieks done to upbeat synth music.

Death Metal, Black Metal, and Thrash Metal take up a huge chunk of the metal that I listen to.......so I quite enjoy listening to guttural vocals.......so yeah, I prefer them over clean vocals.

Well considering I like to understand the person singing, I'd say clean. I never understood the appeal of metal myself. I mean, I like some of Metallica and Iron Maiden's songs, but all the other stuff is just noise to me.

I guess a "rough" voice would be my preference. As long as it displays some emotion but doesn't go ridiculously over the top (screamo). I don't mind smooth vocals though, as long as they aren't autotuned.

Clean, if I can't understand you what's the point of listening to you... Also I use music to get me through my day. I don't need anyone growling or sreaming at me to pass the time.

I've never understood the reasoning of having to know what they're saying in order to enjoy the music.... Sure, it can make it more enjoyable when you're able to sing/scream along with them......but I only know the lyrics to about 5% of my songs.....and I do have a fair few albums that I listen to over and over...

Exactly, I can know the lyrics but it doesn't usually have the same impact as just closing my eyes and imagining the music and feeling it, and the evil vocals give it that extra kick.

I think both are good they just need to be used properly, but if i had to choose one it would probably be harsh, except for pig squeals I hate them with a passion for some reason and cant stand them, the closest i ever come to them is listening to dying fetus

I like when a band can mix it up, like The Beatles. If John or Paul were singing all the songs a lot of them would lose their style/feel.

They're both awesome in a general sense. But hell, whether I'm listening to Between the Buried and Me, Within Temptation, The Dear Hunter, or Immortal Technique, it all depends on how the voice fits the music. I don't want Taylor Swift vocalists in death metal and I don't want Tommy Rogers vocalists in prog rock (well his clean vocals might work).

I hate listening to 99% of vocals that are 'harsh'. It only fits in very specific types of songs, and even then it's grating at best and embarrassing at worst.
