Sorry if this has been posted before, but I just ran across it. Apparently, Quantum Stealth, a follow-up to the color changing SmartCamo, renders soldiers completely invisible. This will be very cool if it is true... CNN: Stunning Technology Makes Troops Invisible 1:28 Reporter: "How invisible are we talking here? If I walked into a room with a soldier wearing one of these cloaks.." Hyperstealth: "You wouldn't see him at all. He would be completely invisible to you." Reporter: "This isn't make believe. The military has seen this so called quantum stealth technology..." US military soon to be invisibleMore Quantum Stealth Technology Articles...

How did they do it?

Did they create a material that causes radiations in the visible range to bend around it?

Maybe it's some kind of cunningly woven optical fibre fabric.

I saw the video but unless the person is completely motionless then that would be impossible. It will probably look like something from the Predator movies that you see a distortion on the air but even more noticeable. Notice how the reflection is always somehow distorted.

Even in the still shots, you can see the outline. And you're right, it's just going to be more noticeable if there's any kind of motion whatsoever. Yeah, it's still impressive, but it's not complete invisibility.

Not to mention sound. Although some of the videos I've seen have some sequences when the person is lying completely still and it's very difficult to discern them specially if the background has only one type of texture like grass. But still it probably also depends on the angle and distance from where you're watching.

Does it matter?  If a sniper is wearing a cloak and sitting in a bush or a window, you wont see him until it's way too late

With regular camouflage the idea is to make it harder for the enemy to see you, which is why troops in desert environments wear desert camouflage, troops in Arctic areas wear white camouflage, etc. Nobody is expecting you to be completely invisible, but by blending in and making as little noise as possible it makes it harder for the enemy to see you until it is too late. Especially when you consider that in this thread we are explicitly looking for the people while in a real combat situation you don't know where to look.

are you saying you want civilians to have access to this technology? Criminals would be infinitely more dangerous with this stuff.

One can only hope that this technology is offered to the general public, which is certainly will have to be before long after it's ready for mass production. Lots of money to be made from this I'm quite certain.

The government with a monopoly on weapons and force is far more dangerous than any street thug. Privatizing this technology makes it available to those who would use it to defend themselves.

I trust most governments less than the average civilian. It's definitely a dangerous technology either way. People should read The Invisible Man by Wells before using it :P

I never said it needs to be. I was merely commenting on the quote which said "he would be completely invisible" and calling bull$*** on it. "Completely invisible" is an impossible standard anyway, unless the wearer is okay with also being blind. From what I've seen, the technology is impressive enough that it doesn't need that kind of hyperbole.

And to all the people criticizing this technology because it will be used to kill, I hope you also realize that this also has the potential to limit the NEED to kill. If nothing else, it's easy to see how this has the potential for allowing US soldiers to do their jobs with fewer of them being killed. And being less of an open target at least potentially allows them to avoid making as many unnecessary kills. Get in unseen, take out the intended target, it's pretty easy to see how that can limit the loss of life by reducing the number of people who get in the way. Not that I'm saying that's how the technology WILL be used, but technology is just technology. Some people seem to be upset that this technology even exists, when they should just be opposed to malicious use of such technology.

I hope this is the case. A little more security in one's surroundings hopefully will result in fewer rash decisions with tragic consequences that tend to happen under pressure.

The unwitting people of the free world won't even see the hobnailed boot of American Imperialism approaching.

They'll remain unaware of it until they feel it upon the napes of their necks.

Too expensive, will never happen on troop level. Vehicles maybe, jets and planes definitely(to a small extent). It can't possibly be used for individual troops, no country will ever spend the money to make one guy slightly less visible when they could do it with a tank instead.

Does this technology also make planes disappear on radar? I don't know. But if not, then it seems like using this on aircraft would be a complete and total waste.

I can see this being significantly beneficial to snipers but otherwise I think we got to wait more longer till the production is cheaper and is adaptable for combat scenarios to really see this actually happen.
