Hey guys, I recently told my mom that I was an atheist/humanist and she freaked out. I understand that she believes in god, but she's not a religious person. Even so, sheappeared to be somewhat freaked out.

I also feel more comfortable speaking openly about my non-faith orientation, but people in my highly religious society sometimes dont accept me. It's like they don't understand that this is not a choice, but we're born this way.

That doesn't mean I'm a bad person. Everytime I say "I don't believe in god, but I believe in order for our species to survive we must do everything possible to aid one another," People still don't care. I mean it's like not believing in god makes you more moraly correct.

How was your experience coming out of the closet?

haven't "actually" done it, but i'm sure my father knows and just does not give a sh*t. Most my friends know and don't care and we often joke around when it comes to religion/atheism since they are religious themselves.

I have two closets to come out of. I'm an ex-Muslim atheist and a transsexual. The people I've come out to have been very nice and accepting (although I always receive an endless stream of questions, which doesn't bother me), but I have yet to tell my other, less tolerant family members anything.

Most of my freinds are religious, but I avoid religious topics. I'd love to talk about religion in an intelligent manner, but they always seem to come up with the same arguements. "The world is 6,000 years old because..."

I still like my friends, though.

I'm bisexual, but I don't tell anyone. That's much less harder for people to understand, especially since everyone thinks I'm straight, because of my manliness.

I'm bisexual as well. That's not much of a closet, though, since it's very easy for me to hide the fact that I like both sexes. Transsexualism, however, is very easy to notice. People are already getting bothered by the fact that my hair is longer than usual these days. And besides, once I tell them I'm transsexual, nothing else I tell them will surprise them.

You don't have to be gay to be transsexual. In fact, quite a few of them are either bisexual or straight. And I also know pansexual and asexual trans* folks.

People seem to think atheism = soulless, hateful and moral-free people. Which is silly, but what can you do. Most people know I'm agnostic/atheist. It's not a 'closet' for me. My grandparents are catholic and if/when the time comes that they prod and ask about my religious beliefs, I'll tell them I don't have any and think organized religion is one of the most outdated ideas and pathetic coverups for hate and fearmongering I have ever encountered. It matters very little to me what other people think about my religious beliefs or lack thereof.

Pretty much. I don't understand why people feel like atheists are hateful, because most of them aren't. The few I've met in my country actually are awesome, open minded and good people. I believe religious indoctrination is to blame for this.

had one friend come out of the closet to me, thought he was lying at first because he usually said lots of things for shock value, but I believed him, I was fine with it, he later told his mother and brother and much later his father, nobody seemed to care as much had another friend where when he came out of the closet to his parents and they reacted negatively and it was very upsetting and he was contemplating suicide, and we didn't know until he called us all upset and we had to talk him down, but his family learned to live with him being gay and things were better for him after that both those friends came out in college, then later some other friends of mine came out of the closet after college, which was strange because we all had lots of gay friends and were in a very open and accepting environment but they weren't comfortable coming out until later I also ran into a friend back at a party who I hadn't seen in years and he had just come out of the closet like that same night I had run into him, yet he was aggressively in conflict with it like some part of him was still repulsed by his sexuality or he was at least acting it because he'd been playing it straight for so long, but once he accepted his sexuality he was back to being his cool self

For many atheists, disclosing their atheism to people really is the same as coming out of a closet. A good example are those apostates in Islamic countries.

I wasn't saying your post was anecdotal, just that he thinks his little "many people I know" line seems to invalidate any claims. So maybe if I just post something like, I know very few atheists, does that cancel each other out? Just my rambling :P

It's funny because I just blurted out at my dad I didn't believe in God a couple weeks ago when we were arguing. His only response was "That explains your lifestyle." And he blames himself for not forcing me to go to church with him enough.

Now I wanna know what his reaction will be when I come out of the other closet.

I don't think I'll ever tell my extended family this. I mean, it isn't like I hide it. They probably strongly suspect it. But outright saying it in their face would only lead to problems.

That's weird I'm atheist and hardly anybody knows because I don't feel the need to go around advertising it. Try it sometime.
