Over the last few years, I have grown to hate commercials SO much that after I see one, I often want to kill every single person in the company's advertising department. They are SO ****ING STUPID. Commercials insult my intelligence. They insult your intelligence. The obviously fake and overly positive "interviews" with past "customers"...the little commercial characters these companies try to jam down our throats as "funny" or "cute"...their jingles and rhymes that get stuck in your head...god, they just piss me off to no end.
I was watching TV earlier, and a commercial for Miracle Whip came on. This commercial presented Miracle Whip, a substitute for mayonnaise, as some sort of social movement. There were people of all races dancing and smiling together, and a young male voice said something to the effect of "We are Miracle Whip, and we will not be silenced." Really? "We are Miracle Whip"? What a dumbass, overly dramatic line. It's a SUBSTITUTE FOR MAYONNAISE THAT YOU SPREAD ON SANDWICHES, IDIOTS. Almost as a reflex-- a response to the commercial-- I immediately made a mental note..."remember never to purchase a jar of Miracle Whip at the store."
Here's another example. That stupid girl on the Progressive commercials..."Just name your price, and we'll create a policy to fit your budget LOL!!! It's so easy!!!" Yea...you're annoying as hell. But more importantly, who would actually join Progressive because of that?? Name your own price? Right, because I'm sure if you choose their best available policy, Progressive will just let you "name" a price as low as you feel like paying /sarcasm. I kid you not, it was that girl in the Progressive commercials who actually CAUSED me to switch my car insurance from Progressive to State Farm (although now that douchebag in the State Farm commercials is pretty bad too). When the woman at Progressive asked me why I was switching, I told her, "That girl in your commercials is annoying the hell out of me, and I can't justify supporting advertising like that with my money."
I mean, honestly, I don't understand how advertising gimmicks can work. How are they worth the money it costs to put them on television? Are there idiots out there who actually get taken in by this crap and respond positively to it? Why can't companies just say, "Hey, this is our product. Here's why we think you should buy it. Please buy it." I have done the best I can to describe in words how much I hate commercials, though I'm still not sure I expressed that hate well enough.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way.
