Obviously, some black people do care. The Civil War may have been over 100 years ago, but the civil rights movement was midway last century. It's possible that some of the people against that movement are still alive and still U.S. citizens. You do the math.

It doesn't really matter to me, at this point.

Well, coming from a black dude, the NAACP complains about a lot of stupid things. To me it is just a flag. Nowadays the flag means more southern pride than anything, not about slaves or hate.

Well there have been an outbreak of Confederate flags worn at my high school lately. It's not that I have a problem with it, it's just that they should be worn for southern pride, and none of the people at my school wearing them are from the south. (I live in Kansas). Most of them are just wannabe rednecks and it makes me rage so hard.

That flag actually annoys me. I just see it now used to display "redneck" pride or whatever people like to call it. It's not even about southern pride anymore. It seems like it's more about kids letting everyone know they like taking their truck and goin' muddin', when in reality most sit in their cookie cutter house playing Halo with all the other concrete cowboys. /rant

The Confederacy is over. It no longer exists. To continue to pay tribute to it is tantamount to harboring treasonous ideals. This is the United States of America, not the Confederacy. If these people love the Confederacy so much, they should just secede and form there own nation.

I wouldn't say I have a problem with it exactly, and I do agree the NAACP cries over just about everything. But being from the north east, I know a lot of people in the north still associate it with racism and intolerance, and I can understand why they do. Some people even go as far as to say that displaying a confederate flag is just as bad as displaying a Nazi flag.

It kind of just seems to go against the U.S. simply because you're taking pride in an event where a group of people, or group of states said "**** you!" to the U.S.

I don't ever recall Kid Rock using this flag.

Flag

Ask the NAACP how they feel about the Georgia state flag now. They moaned about the old state flag and now they have a version of this.

The difference is England's an extant country. The confederacy was more of a historical movement and to most people, that's probably what the flag still represents. Maybe it's more like a European waving the flag of some historical European movement.

Well the flag a lot of people think of is the Confederate Battle Flag and it's what the Confederates marched into battle with, the people waving that flag are either stupid for not relizing that and claiming that it means something else or not trying to say that the Confederation should have remained.

It means different things to different people. Some see it solely as a symbol of southern pride, others as a representation of slavery. And of course there are the racists. I'm rather apathetic to it.

The thought usually puzzles me.. But 9 out of 10 times the people I have met who fly said flags are usually extremely conservative.. Up here in Michigan the guys who fly it seem to have quite a few racist thoughts from who I met.. But in the end it really isn't something I care about one way or another, and I always kept my preconceptions to my self.

There is nothing wrong with it at all. It's for people to remember their history and to be proud of who they are, you can't put down anyone for that. I have the confederate flag in my room for the reasons of it being part of my history, and I am very proud of it. I don't wave it around like a lot of idiots do just because they're trying to be "country". I grew up in the south and I see a lot of these people all the time and it is upsetting to see just because they don't know the reasons behind that flag. I know just about everything from my history/heritage and I proudly show it, and I always will. People should really get into there heritage more, it's a cool experience.

Yes, but that is no loger the case with this flag. In fact, the defender of the contitution which this flag represents is currently a half Black man. That has never been the case with the Confederate flag.

The fact remains that slavery existed under the US flag and yet, people conveniently forget about it. They see the Confederate Battle Flag and scream racism and such. The NAACP had it backfire on them when they got the Georgia state flag changed. As I already stated, they have a modified version of the actual flag of the Confederacy flying over the state. Before people play the race card when it comes to flags, they should study some history and understand that there are those who corrupted one flag for all the wrong reasons.

What would the NAACP done if the KKK had used the US flag instead? Would the US had to have gotten a new flag?

I haven't forgotten. Yes, white people were the intended U.S. citizen, but the country changed to how it is today. The current flag symbolizes this. About the KKK....They represent the opposite of current U.S. values. So, while they could and do claim it as their flag, as it is indeed their right in what it represents, they are still advocating racism. Honestly, if they used the US flag, they would have probably been dealt with more directly or completely ignored. Of course, there's always the possibility that they would be treated the exact same way. I don't think they would be, though, since they would be using the official US flag to send a message of opposition against the government. In that case, they might as well form their own political party.

Do you think they would get much support if they did? I don't.

It is nowhere near the same... The entire basis for the Confederacy was slavery... And 87.8% of the reasoning for cecession during the American Civil War wasn't even about abolishing slavery in the South it was about preventing the spread of slavery into the West...

I agree with the NAACP, I have family that live in the South and proudly wave a Confederate flag in their yard... And every single one of them is a racist piece of **** I don't know one person who waves a Confederate flag as ONLY a symbol of southern pride (apart from Kid Rock, who just waves it around because he is dumb)... Quite literally every person I have seen displaying that flag is racist... Whether they just be ignorant hicks or the KKK...

I have very little faith in people, so when I see it I honestly believe that it could mean racism.

And even if it is just Southern pride, it still sucks, because the South itself sucks.

The Confederate flag stands for freedom and independence from foreign occupation and the resistance to the autocratic and genocidal Mr. Lincoln.

It's a proud standard that has, unfortunately, been tarnished by radicals. And this being the OT board (and that middle-school social studies is more often than not the fullest-extent most forumites here have learned about the topic), I'm sure there have been more than a few posts about how the flag entirely represents slavery and nothing else. This overlooks the fact the vast-majority of southerners didn't have slaves, and many fought and died because the north was either invading their territory or threatening to. But, again, this is the OT board. Facts come after laughable generalizations.

That make no sense, I mean the Nazi's were a heartless group led by one of the most ruthless dictators to ever live. There is a BIG difference from the nazi's and the Confederate Army. I'm not going to sit here and give you a history lesson but I do think you need to brush up on it a bit. And you're damn right I'm going to be proud of it, because I had ancestors who served in the Civil War, that risked their lives because that's what they were told to do, who were willing to give their lives for what most believe was a stupid cause. So I proudly honor them by having the Confederate flag in my room. To the people that do it in racist way...well I don't speak for them, but there wrong in what they do. If you would've read more clearly into my statement you would have seen where I wrote that these people need to learn the reasons behind that flag before they wave it around. And there are stronger reasons behind that flag besides racism.

First things first, Its ************* ugly. And lets be honest, waving it around is practically treason as it represenstwanting to break theunion (which is illegal). So thats my 2cents.

And its still ugly. Uglier than what an entire ugly tree beating someone to ugliness.

No sir it was due slavery.. Just because the majority of people in the South did not own slaves, it didn't matter.. The people in control of the government were the said slave holders and got the poor southerners to fight for it.. It was for economic reasons plain and simple.. The Union soldiers did not do it for any noble reasons either most of them, it provided a wage three meals a day.. Or they were drafted.. This nonsense of how the confederate flag historically represents pride is quite absurd.. The South was as much hypocrits as any one else.. Take for instance they claimed they wanted state rights over government in their secession.. That the federal government was infringing on states too much.. This didn't stop them putting forward and fully supporting the fugitive slave act.. A federal government decree that there was no safe state a slave could run to, slave hunters could freely move through the United States to catch their querry.

Now this doesn't mean I think what the flag means to day is wrong.. I personally couldn't care less either way..

Again, generalizations. A union officer once asked a captured Confederate; "Why are you boys fighting us? You don't have any slaves, and you never have." The young 'Johnny Reb' replied; "Because ya'll are over here." Most rebels fought for their homes and families. There's no reason for any Southerner to be ashamed of that or the banner they fought and died under. To label their cause as entirely focused on slavery is, again, to gloss over glaring facts. It's as much a disservice to them as the racist twits who wave the banner around are.
