Why is it alot of people say that people who dress in Emo, Gothic, or Metal ways just need to be themselves? Why do they assume that they are not? They don't know what that person likes! Some people really like emo/goth/industrial/metal/rap music and the subculture can influence their personal dress style.

Whats wrong with that? Why is everyone judging them and generalizing an entire subcuture that they really don't know anything about?

They always say "they need to be themselves instead of goth/emo/whatever" but that statement doesn't make sense. How can that person speak for them? My sty1e is definantly my own but it has considerable influence from various subcultures. How does that make me some clone? I saw something I liked and made it my own. Also why are some people so bothered by a new st1ye like emo? Its almost like they are bothered by it so much that they feel compelled enough to stereotype and degrade EVERYONE who dresses that way. Its just skinny jeans and a different hair sty1e Get over yourself.

At the same time I'm also sick of people ragging on people who wear "preppy" or "mainstream" clothes as just conformist people. Mainstream clothing isn't exactly my thing but it does look good on some people and if they like it why does that make them a clone?

I'm sick of people calling preppy people conformist for wearing something popular in the mainstream and I'm also sick of people calling goth/emo/punk/metal people non conformist conformists and generalizing the whole subcultures which can be abstract really.

Its elitist no matter who's saying it and it needs to stop.

I see your point, but I still think it's a bit ironic to call yourself a "non-conformist" and then dress just like a bunch of other people who say the same thing. I accept people for who they are though, so if you want to dress in a weird/different way that's okay with me.

Except I saw something I liked and chose to emulate it. Thats not conforming. (at least not for the "reasons" people rag on these people for)

I don't call myself a non conformist. I was talking about how some people always assume that Emo kids or Goth kids are just a bunch of non conforming conformists simply because they have some sort of problem with them. Like everyone in that subculture must be dressing that way because everyone else does it and not because they like the music or whatever.

They aren't conforming to something for shallow reasons. They find something they like and follow it. I really think that the detractors of these subcultures put more emphasis on "conformity" than them sometimes.

Wearing emo clothes doesn't make you a conformist or a non conformist. Its WHY your wearing it that makes the difference.

I think a lot of goths dress and act like they do because they don't want to conform...which is odd because SO many people dress and act the same way. If you truly don't want to conform, just be youself. :P That's what I do. On the other hand there are goths/emo/etc., who dress and act the way they do because that is their personality and I respect that. :)

Wearing Goth or Emo clothes doesn't make you conformist or non conformist. Its WHY your dressing that way that makes the difference and determines wether or not someone is being an individual or a clone jumping on a scene.

So yeah someGoths/Emos can be some of the biggest non conformists and some can be the biggest conformists out there as well. Same goes for some of you "normal individualistic" people out there too who are "just themselves". I'm sure given the way that some of them unfairly rip on Emo/Goth peoplethat they have their own unique style which was not influenced by anything in any way shape or form.

Ok, so why do goths tend to pick on people who are up beat, wear brighter clothing, etc. That is those peoples personalities...Goths obviously see something wrong with the way everyone else acts or dresses. I like to believe I have my own still and don't coform, even though I'm not goth.

The trouble with being an individual is that you'll still get 'pigeonholed' by the masses. Rather than figuring each other out one by one, society tends to generically group any individuals under some overall descriptive title. The group dosen't want to spend the effort involved.

Good or bad, it is what seems to get done the most.
