Article from this mornings BBC news.

they are so understaffed only 2 of the 15 towers have guards.

Two prisoners escaped from a jail in Argentina while it was using a dummy to man one of its guard towers.

Prison staff said a lack of resources meant that only two out of their 15 guard towers were occupied at any given time.

They told a local newspaper they put a football with a prison officer's cap in a third, to create the illusion of an extra guard

And due to a lack of personnel, only the two towers at either end of the prison were being manned by the guards.

"We've made a dummy out of a football and a prison officer's cap, so that the prisoners see its shadow and think they're being watched," the source said.

"We named him Wilson, like in the film Cast Away, and put him in one of the towers," they added referring to the volleyball Tom Hanks' character uses for company.

The escaped convicts are on the run.

why the heck did they think the prisoners would bother to stay inside the walls?

why not just try to run things on the "honour system"

That's great, why bother having a prison if you can't man the posts. You should at the least have four towers manned. That way each sentry canobserve one direction at all times. So if they were each covering 90 degrees which is a person's field of view they should have been able to keep a tight observation.

Well, Mr. Wilson does have a lot of problems (like being an inanimate object), so I don't think it's entirely fair to blame him.

Eh...I don't think footballs are all that great with a rifle.

Only need one shooter. Blow someone'sa head clean off with a high powered rifle and the scatter of brain and skull wouldshock most people. Most of them would just stop.Eventually after a few are shot theprisoners who haven't stopped trying to run yet would since they can't outrun a bullet and they definitely can't move fast orbe a hard target while binded to three other people especially if one of them has already been wounded or killed.

They escaped because they were able to slip out unseen. Can't move fast or subdued while shackled to three others. And how will theyclimb if you shackle three smaller guys to a big heavy guy that can't climb?

They needed at least four towers. If they each cover a corner and focus 90 degrees at all times everything is supervised. The probably don't use the goodconcertina wire either nor enough of it. Probably because if one of the inmates was ripped open by the wire people would call it inhumane.

The inner wall should be lower than the outer fence and their should beanine foot bynine foot pit all the way around the inner wall full of concertina. Even if they could climb the wall and get free of the concertina on the top of the wallthey would have to jump three yards over that pit hit the fence and get over all of that concertina wire without geting stuck on it or torn up. Most of them would just fall in the pit. Most of them would rip their hands and kneesapart while trying to pull their selves onto the top of the wall.

It was a football referred pretty much only by Americans and Australians as "soccer" - the rest of the world knows it as football and gaining popularity in the other two with the success of the American side and the socceroos

"The pair dressed in full sheepskin fleeces, complete with heads, to lie low among farm flocks. Robbers Maximiliano Pereyra, 25, and Ariel Diaz, 28, stole the sheep hides from a ranch after breaking out of an Argentinian maximum security prison a week ago. And they have managed to evade the 300 cops on their trail - despite locals seeing them running through fields at night. A farmworker at La Almeda said: "They were wearing grey clothes but had full sheepskins, including the sheeps' heads, over their heads and backs." Police say spotting the pair among thousands of sheep is "almost impossible". But one warned: "They can't pull the wool over our eyes forever." I wouldn't even admit that the building was meant to be maximum security because whoever designed the layout of the facility and it's barriers was not serious. You don't need that many towers. Four towers with four outer towers and one central tower is enough. The four exterior towers are outposts just encase they manage to get out but with a proper interior wall, moat and fence they shouldn't be able to get out, not without a ladder. Otherwise they would get stuck on the wall, thefence or in the moat. If they are under staffed their security is not maximum. So if that's a maximum security prison I wonder what their minimum is?

I think they depended too much on the out of the way location to provide security. It did for awhile but they got a little too lax with the guard to prisoner ratio. Wilson does not enter the equation except to give the newspaper reporters some comic relief in the story that will probably lead to some changes in the department that is in charge of this mess.
