Cop Issues 800 Tickets For Texting and Driving

Cop claims hes issued nearly 800 tickets for texting and driving and expects to reach 1000 by years end. He gets most people at stop lights due to their erroneous thinking that it is OK to do so since the vehicle isn't moving. He counts the number of times someone taps a screen to determine whether or not someone is texting.

Do people who get ticketed for texting and driving in states who have the laws against it deserve the tickets and fines they receive?

Yes they do.  Texting and driving is bad.  I think the penalty is not enough.  They should have their car impounded for a week if they get caught.

No text is ever worth killing someone else so you can read or send.

I'm not sure if it was the Toronto cops or the region next to them.  One day they had a cop dress up like a homeless guy and stand near an intersection with a cardboard sign that said, "Hello, my name is Constaple so and so.  If you are talking on your phone or texing right now you are about to get a ticket!"   The uniformed cops were just up the road. 

With the amount of car accidents caused daily by texting and driving, I see no reason not to ticket them. Texting at a stop light is bad too because you have people who are so busy texting they don't notice the light turn green and hold up traffic. I understand some people feel they can do it and not get in an accident but you can't let one person get away with it while punishing another.

I don't text and drive but i do change songs on my mp3 and ive never gotten close to being in an accident. All you have to do is use speech to text now anyway...pretty simple. So in a way they kind of do deserve it.

At stop lights? Kinda ridiculous. If the word on that gets it out, it might just encourage people to text while moving so the cop can't count them.

Even speech to text takes attention from the road.  Same as talking on a hands free device.   When you ask your brain to start concentrating on something that is not in the car you take attention away from your driving, which you should be paying attention too. 

I operate heavy equipment in road construction.  Though sometimes I have gas pedal, clucth, brake, and other levers or sticks that do different things, along with people walking on the ground around me I can still concentrate on all of that because it's all part of the situation I'm concentrating on.   I tried talking on a phone and driving years ago before it was illegal here and I didn't like how it felt.

I think that car companies are trying to add way to many features to cars now.  A gas pedal, brakes and steering wheel is all you need, along with a seat for your butt.  Cars are meant for getting to point A to point B, and not for bringing your whole ******* life behind the wheel with you.

Talking on the phone while driving is illegal where you live? Where I live it is only illegal in construction zones, and school zones. I've never had much of a problem talking and driving on the phone. Hell, I eat and drive too. I also select songs on my MP3 player. The only wreck I've ever been in was when someone rear-ended me at a red light going 45 miles per hour.

Yeah, texting and talking is illegal here unless you are using a hands free device.  I'm in Ontario, Canada.  

You can have your car impounded for 7 days and a fine if you get caught driving 50 km/h above the posted speed limit. 

Both happen allot where I live.  People unable to obtian a message stressing saftey because their personally life is far more important than the safety of others around them.  

Sheep don't like to run, yet our economy requires it...  so "they" say.  We're bound to run into each other from time to time right.  I can just toss out a sorry that means nothing and be on my way.

Ignorance runs in the veins of the 25,000 people in this small town that I live in.  They will cut you off, walk out in front of you to cross a road nowhere near a crosswalk and give you a dirty look if you ask "WTF?"  

The other day I was at the gas station waiting in line to pay and get a pack of smokes.  When it was my turn to pay the guy behind me reached around me and threw his money on the counter and said "Pump 6, I can't wait any longer"  he turned around and walked out.  Yet, I guarantee if I did that to him he'd have some kind of snide remark for me.  

It's either the economy or the Government that is ****ing people up.  Could be both.

B) yes, it is the actual conversation that is distracting you.  That is why even with hands free devices for phones, talking on the phone is still detrimental to your driving abilities

On thing sets talking to a passenger and on a phone apart.  Your passenger can always say "Look out"  On top of that, when you talk to a passenger they are part of the car.  It is easy to hold a conversation while you drive with someone in the car.   We didn't go through 100 years of Driving without ever tackling the issue of a distracting passenger for a reason.

It's only when your mind leaves the car on the phone or texting that makes you distracted.  I've never had a problem watching the road and talking to someone else in the car.

We never did anything about passengers because the distraction level was never this great from them.  My mother drove fine with 4 kids in the car, and you can imagine how distracting that would be.  Put her on a phone while driving and the result of distraction is more severe.

I have a clutch, gas, break, and a few levers or sticks to **** with while people walk around me on the ground.  And if I ever hit one of those people I wouldn't feel it.  But, I can concentrate on all of that because it's all part of where I am and what I'm doing.   Talking to the wife about how Sally needs new shoes while I drive down the hiway has nothing to do with driving.
