This has got to be one of the stupidest traffic laws I have ever heard of.

It's bad enough that our speed limits here are slow as hell to begin with.

I heard they have computer chipe in there heads that allow them to process all the maths involved in working out your exact speed. :)

They do that in a lot of states. If you fly past a cop going 70 mph, they probably know you're going past the speed limit :P

And again, if they're watching traffic and everyone is going the same general speed and someone flies past, pretty safe to assume your flying

Depends where you live. In some places, people either don't trust the police or outright dislike them mainly due to corruption. This does happen in the US.

Cop does not mean saint.

It's not difficult to tell when one vehicle is moving faster then the other vehicles on the road. The court pointed out that the officer had sufficient "background and training" to make an educated guess. Does it matter if he can't estimate as accurately as a radar gun can? It's not like his margin of error left a chance of the motorist not speeding. He's accused of going 82 in a 60 zone. 20+ over the limit is pretty obvious to the eye.

The guy was speeding, got caught, and tried to weasel his way out of a fine on technicalities.

He did use a radar gun. It said 82. However, this evidence was ruled out on a technicality because the officer didn't produce documentation proving he was certified to use it (as if it's a complicated tool to use?).

That's how it is in most states :|.

Contrary to what you always hear, cops usually do not have to have a radar reading to show you.

Its really not that hard to tell if someone is speeding. Maybe anything within 5 miles of the speed limit is but anything over kind of obvious.

Well to be fair if you an Ohio driver the odds are you are breaking some sort of traffic law.

Seriously half the car accidents in northern Kentucky are from Ohioans.

Ohio learn to ******* drive.

from ohio (from article)

"Authorities in Ohio say a man survived crashing his car into a house but was killed walking away from the accident when he was struck by a pickup truck."

You can actually only do this if the court find that you have enough experience to make an accurate account of the speed based on the circumstances. An officer cannot stop you whenever he likes and tell you he thinks you were speeding.

If this is true then that's much more reasonable. I still don't agree with it in full but this doesn't sound absurd like being able to pull someone over if you think they're speeding.

Just contest every ticket so it goes to court then ask for proof that you were actually speeding.

no, no, they are not after me. No conspiracies. They don't give a crap about safety in terms of vehicle and traffic laws. All they care about is writing the tickets. More tickets=more revenue.

it won't change anything, that's always how things have operated, it's just making it harder for drivers to give cops a hard time about it.

Well its only bad if its abused. There are many instances where a cop doesnt have his radar on but clearly sees someone speed past them at reckless rates therefore should still be allowed to ticket for speeding.

Oleg_Huzwog

You see, though, the police officer has absolutely no evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he isn't lying. In this case, it's one man's word against another. A police officer's word alone should not be sufficient to convict someone. Police lie like everyone else. The state should have more evidence than a police officer's word to convict someone of a crime.

That's exactly what I think. It's innocent until proven guilty, and a cop's word shouldn't count as solid proof.

In radar school you have to be able to accurately guess the speed or vehicles within 5 mph. I'm pretty good at it. I actually had a guy in court argue a ticket I gave him and went outside with a judge, the guys attorney and a traffic officer with radar and I accurately guessed 20 cars in a row within 3mph without radar. It can be done but takes practice. He was found guilty. Plus he was doing 50 in a 25 in a workzone.

I believe Cleveland is Native American for "The only bad part of Ohio". Though I could be wrong.
