There's this theory running rampant that life is just an illusion being controlled by your concious. Reality's not a dream, per-se, but it IS LIKE a dream. In as much as a dream is a projection within our minds of the potential-information laying around within the mind, so reality is an illusory projection of the potential that is space. Just as dreams, reality is produced much like a movie projection within our minds eye.

That's certainly a possibility. Makes as much sense as all of the other wild ideas being tossed about. I see no reason to latch onto that idea as a truth, but sure, the speculation is fun.

Yes, it could be. Not like it is something I care much for, though.

Ifmy life was a movie, this would be one crap movie. >_>

But in all seriousness, if an illusion isn't real, then I wouldn't be able to feel or interact.

You could try to argue it philosophically, but I guarantee that you will not live it out in your everyday life ....unless you are literally insane.

If life isn't real, then how can there be a consciousness? Either you're alive or dead, and being alive is the only way to have a consciousness. Yes, one could argue that nothing we perceive is real...but then what? Ok, so you believe that nothing is real, and thus, anything you could ever do is pointless. Why do something for the sake of something you don't believe is real? And why question the existence of something you believe is real, something which all of your senses insist must be real?

The only thing that we can truly know is that we exist in some form... unless there is a being that created a non-existent creation that thinks it exists... which logically makes no sense (assuming logic exists). *mind implodes outward*

Existence exists. Consciousness identifies. Reality is that which we identify. "There are no absolutes" is an absolute. "A is A". Etc Etc.

Sure, but somehow I have a very hard time believing in that. I know this is going to sound so ridiculous, but it just feels too...real to be false or an illusion.

I doubt anyone's mind could subconsciously create all the information in the world around us and every problem that every person deals with in the world. as well as the fact that their are 6.5 billion people in the world who would have to be indiviudally created by our subconscious as well as their emotions, reactions, interactions with each other, and the other trillions of things that happen without our knowing or control. There is no way that our minds would be that subconsciously strong and complex.

Philosophers long ago believed in the Forms... then Aristotle stopped that nonsense. Then the Middle Ages forgot about Aristotle and resurrected Plato. Hence the need for each generation to educate themselves, instead of just saying "other people have solved it." That's a cop out.

oh and if its an illusion of mine then all your thoughts are mine as well as anyone who reads this and everything you've ever done i decided you would do as well as everything that everyone has ever done in the history of the universe. I also subconsciously wrote every single formula and scientific equation or created the person who did it because for life to be an illusion i would have to have created it right? unless i'm an illusion too which would mean that we are all fake and that this is pointless to discuss anyways. by the by, if i'm fake i think i'll jump out of this 12th story window, the fall is just an illusion right?

It could be. It also could be manipulated according to our thoughts, but it is possible that our brain knows this so it prevents it from happening. Perhaps we are much stronger than we thought! (In the mind I mean)
EDIT: I have a better idea, what if we are all in a dream that is one huge interconnected dream, therefore we see and can interact with one another. Therefore when we die we 'wake' from this dream!
What if eh...Hah hah.

But what if someone else rejects that quote? How do you truly know they actually have a consciousness outside of your own existence? :P

It seems I must use another Ayn Rand quote. :P "Man cannot survive except by gaining knowledge, and reason is his only means to gain it. Reason is the faculty that perceives, identifies and integrates the material provided by his senses. The task of his senses is to give him the evidence of existence, but the task of identifying it belongs to his reason, his senses tell him only that something is, but what it is must be learned by his mind. " Sure, I can say only I have consciousness, and no one else, but there's nothing to suggest that. I'm aware of my consciousness, you're aware of your consciousness, and we're both aware of how aware we both are, and so we can reasonably say we both exist. If not, if we assumed it was just us and no one else existed, why not reject everything else that our senses and reason tell us? And once you do that, there's no point in living, and the very act of trying to make a reason for living would be a contradiction, because you would need some form of reasoning to come up with it, and it could only be pursued by means of your senses.

This is confusing. So is that video pretty much saying that matter doesn't exist?

Is it saying that what ever I see through my eyes is just an illusion; that it doesn't exist?

Is it saying that people subconsciously make things happen? So everyone in the world made the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks occur subconsciously?

Well that makes sense.

Can someone explain this as simple as possible? I'm sort of lost on this subject; that is if the this subject exists.:P

So the general idea is that we can't observe the universe because we can onl;y observe it as observers, so if there was no one around to observe it we wouldn't know if it really existed or not?

Clearly I didn't understand it, but I think it sounds like a whole lot of philosophical "what if's" more or less.

IF that is all true...The answer to the question "If a tree falls in the forest with no one around, does it make a sound" is NO... Nothing is there to observe it, therefore the sound does not exist...
