Social media is cramp! Everything else about the net is great. Cheers
Internet is not ruining society, as always it are the peoples themselves. That's why i don't use facebook, people don't realize the stress they're putting themselves in. The price of fame is pretty big, but you do get a lot in return. Still, i wouldn't want to pay the price no matter how rich and popular i would become. Putting your own face on facebook doesn't make you famous but you're putting your face out there, not realizing you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself. I was born in the late seventies and i knew a time without mobile phones and internet and it was a lot more easy going. The last 5 years i drove the gsm and social media out of my life and my life is at ease now. I can understand everyone is taking more and more drugs or brain medications, life is just too stressfull. Like a cell is just a pain, people ask why didn't you call back , why didn't you answer. The days where you just weren't home are over, well for most of us , but i took that back, I still have a cell, but i hardly use it, and when people call me on my cell , i simply don't pickup or it's for someone close to me, or some practical stuff. When they call to the home phone however , i always pick up. I do love the internet and technology though, avatars are nice, my internet alter ego. No way i'm using my real name and picture, if people want that they have to contact me in person, face to face. looking at each others face on facebook and commenting on each others pictures is voyeurism, those people don't realize they get detached from reality, they're suddenly part of group , the facebook group, that doesn't have any function besides looking at each others pictures. It's vanity at it's worst. I also love online gaming, and i have some friends on xbox live , some of them i know in real life others i don't but we game together , hang out together, and we do something together like gaming or going for a drink (with the ones that live close enough) Internet is also great for information, and it is a huge boost for technology in general because information can be shared easily, the problem is that some information shouldn't be shared. It's the same with all technology, a stick can be used to kill wild animals but it can also be used to kill your fellow man, that why we need laws, the problem with the internet is that it's worldwide and laws are national. Have patience and realize that the internet is a very powerfull technology and power always comes with responsibility.Being completely serious here.

Maybe people have always been stupid, but the internet just makes it a lot easier to witness their stupidity?seems it brings out the stupid in people more than anything.

the internet is still pretty damn young given what a huge impact it has had, and will continue to have.
I would not say it is ruining society, but it is definitely changing it (and generally for the better, imo). There will always be naysayer from the older generation (hell, I am only 29 and I complain about some things like an old man sometimes), but change is tough.
Having all this information, 99% of it freely available, is a beautiful thing. The only downside is that, while I can look up this information, I don't seem to retain it as well as if I Had read it in a book, magazine, or actual news article.

I blame the anonymity more than anything. People do not have to watch what they say, or even think about it, before expressing it via text on the internet.
meh, i think the postivies outweigh the negatives
and many people seem to forget that social media networks can actually facilitate human interaction

exactly. unfortunately, people forget that it is for facilitating, and instead use it for actual socializing. I don't think social rules have translated well to social media. Hell, even sarcasm and various inflections are hard to incorporate in most situations.
