[QUOTE="clayron"]It is my understanding that you can mimic the eating habits of local fauna. Unless you are dealing with something like Koala Bears who eat poison, then you should be alright.MrGeezer
You're wrong.
Just as an example, it's common to see birds eating the berries off of yaupon holly. Try it ytourself, and you'll get sick as ****. Granted, those berries aren't poisonous to generally kill a human directly, but they will make you vomit like hell, and feel like ****. And in the wilderness, that can be deadly.
And then there are the insects. Suppose you see a lot of insects eating milkweed. Do not assume that because they can eat it, that you can too. You're gonna get sick as ****, if you don't die.
Even eating just the bugs can be a problem. Because many bugs eat what humans cannot eat, and the poisons become incorporated into the actual bug. A famous example is the monarch butterfly, which feeds on milkweed. These butterflies are poisonous to many animals, which is why the non-poisonous viceroy butterfly dveloped mimicry as a defensive mechanism. Even going around eating bugs can be deadly as hell, if you eat the wrong bugs.
And that's to say nothing of things like internal parasites. You see Bear Grylls walking around eating all sorts of raw animals. But if you don't know what you're doing, and you plan to be in the wilderness for more than a week, then you'd better cook every single animal you eat. Even if the meat doesn't kill you outright, the parasites might once they get a strong foundation in your body. Anything that makes you remotely sick can kill the hell out of you. In modern society, vomiting or diarrhea isn't a big deal. That can be DEADLY in the wild. If you EVER eat anything that makes you sick enough to vomit or have diarrhea, then you need to be very ****ing worried because that stuff can easily kill you.
Necessary risk. I am in the wilderness, I either die from starvation or test my luck at mimicking the eating habits of others mammals. You are basically saying, "Don't do anything, IT MIGHT KILL YOU."
