Say if you got lost in the wilderness and couldn't find a way back to town.

For food: I'd walk to a nearby stream, grab a swimming fish and eat it raw and squirming.

For shelter: I'd build a two-story cabin with just a few branches and a handful of mud. COMPLETE with a fireplace.

For clothing: I'd punch out a grizzly, skin it and use it's fur as a jacket.

Do you think YOU could survive?

Not only could I survive, I actually think it would be tons of fun. How cool would it be to have to survive on an undiscovered island somewhere in the ocean and find your way home? It would be awesome... 8)

Thats why you learn to fish and hunt... Just kick all your survival skills into high gear and get to work. It shouldnt be to hard to catch a few fish or some small rabbits.

Yes, if by "survive" you mean "prance around hopelessly and die after a few days due to starvation".

At this point, probably not. I MIGHT be able to barely get my ass rescued because I watch so much survival TV shows. I do plan on getting more outdoorsey, and I think a wilderness survival course sounds amazing.

Some steams have enough natural arsenic to kill you with one sip.

But yeah, I could survive. I know how to make snares and draw tannin out of wood chips to cure skins and all that.

Ive never been in a the situation but im sure its not a cake walk like your implying. Sure it sounds easy to 'kill a small rabbit' or 'catch a few fish' but when your stranded on an undiscovered island with no resourses or weapons i think it would be the complete oppisote of fun espicially when you start to starv.

If there is vegetation, you won't starve. You may end up being malnourished unless you find a source of protein. Also, if the island has a stream that runs through it you could easily fashion a casting net from some of the vegetation and catch fish, and even rudimentary tools could be successful in killing animals.

Depends on which wilderness, and how long I'm stuck there.

Generally speaking though, I probably wouoldn't last very long. I wager that most people wouldn't. That's probably why humans are social animals like dogs, as opposed to solitary animals such as cats. If we generally did just fine in the wilderness on our own, then there probably never would have been a need for us to have societies.

there is always going to be something to eat. bugs are are really good source of protein. thats something to keep you going. in the mean time you try to find the sharpest stick around. asuming you brought a survival knife with you you can sharpen one your self. always follow a stream because a stream will get you places. find a fish, start a fire, eat. rinse and repeat like its rune scape.

Even for people who know what they're doing, it just takes one bad slip or fall or scratch, and you're screwed.

Yeah, many people can survive in certain wildernesses alone for a little while. Some can survive far longer. But luck plays a lot to do with that. When you're alone in the wilderness, the smallest mistake can be life-threatening.

Are you an expert on the local flora? You'd damn well better know for sure what kind of vegetation you're eating, or you stand to kill yourself very soon.

It's not that there's no vegetation which can nourish you, it's that there's probably also a lot of vegetation that can kill the hell out of you. If you don't know which is which, I strongly recommend against just taking any old vegetation and making yourself a salad.

It is my understanding that you can mimic the eating habits of local fauna. Unless you are dealing with something like Koala Bears who eat poison, then you should be alright.

You're wrong.

Just as an example, it's common to see birds eating the berries off of yaupon holly. Try it ytourself, and you'll get sick as ****. Granted, those berries aren't poisonous to generally kill a human directly, but they will make you vomit like hell, and feel like ****. And in the wilderness, that can be deadly.

And then there are the insects. Suppose you see a lot of insects eating milkweed. Do not assume that because they can eat it, that you can too. You're gonna get sick as ****, if you don't die.

Even eating just the bugs can be a problem. Because many bugs eat what humans cannot eat, and the poisons become incorporated into the actual bug. A famous example is the monarch butterfly, which feeds on milkweed. These butterflies are poisonous to many animals, which is why the non-poisonous viceroy butterfly dveloped mimicry as a defensive mechanism. Even going around eating bugs can be deadly as hell, if you eat the wrong bugs.

And that's to say nothing of things like internal parasites. You see Bear Grylls walking around eating all sorts of raw animals. But if you don't know what you're doing, and you plan to be in the wilderness for more than a week, then you'd better cook every single animal you eat. Even if the meat doesn't kill you outright, the parasites might once they get a strong foundation in your body. Anything that makes you remotely sick can kill the hell out of you. In modern society, vomiting or diarrhea isn't a big deal. That can be DEADLY in the wild. If you EVER eat anything that makes you sick enough to vomit or have diarrhea, then you need to be very ****ing worried because that stuff can easily kill you.

Necessary risk. I am in the wilderness, I either die from starvation or test my luck at mimicking the eating habits of others mammals. You are basically saying, "Don't do anything, IT MIGHT KILL YOU."

No, I'm saying that you wouldn't make it in the wild.

If you have to guess about what to eat or drink, then you're screwed sooner or later. If you actually do end up living alone in the wilderness, then go ahead and guess if you think you have to. Just be aware that at that point, you're making your survival about pure chance, rather than about the actual skills and knowledge required to survive in the wilderness. And unless yo get extremely lucky, your luck is only going to last for so long.

If you are thrust into the wilderness, you will have to guess what you are capable of eating and drinking unless you have a comprehensive knowledge of local flora and fauna. If you do not have that kind of knowledge, as few people truly do that are just thrown into the wilderness, for whatever reason, you will use the tools and knowledge available to you to keep you alive. People have been doing it for thousands of years. I am sure I would be fine as far as food goes. I'd be more concerned with shelter and what not.
