After a lifetime of saying "i like everything but country", I've finally decided to try it out. Can I get some good stuff to listen to that'll get me into it?

Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson. That's all I like and will listen to in bulk; other than that it's piecemeal ...
Oh and John Denver ... and some Garth Brooks ... that's it.

While John Denver rocks, he's folk not country. If you want to listen to real authentic country music don't listen to today's artists, its all city folks singing pop. Country music is made up of musicians and storytellers and they blend their life experiences from the country into their music. Some of my personal favorites are:
Loretta Lynn
The Carter Family
Chris LeDoux
Conway Twitty
Charley Pride
Hank Williams Sr. (Luke the Drifter)
The Possum (George Jones)
Waylon Jennings
George Strait
Alabama
Don Williams
John Anderson
Merle Haggard
Johnny Cash
Alan Jackson
Shenandoah
Trisha Yearwood
Reba McEntire
I come from the country so I've grown up with country music all my life, and I can relate to a lot of stuff they sang about. I hope this helps you out some.
You guys are missing some of the best stuff out there...
try Alan Jackson. I recommend "Small Town Southern Man", "Don't Rock the Jukebox", "Gone Country" or my all time favourite "Drive". Check out his YouTube page. All his videos are there.
Brad Paisley can REALLY play the guitar. He routinely solos in his songs and injects some humor into his lyrics. Start with "I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishing Song)", "Mud on the Tires" or "Me Neither"
Merle Haggard is a legend. He was country back when it meant womanizing, pot smoking and alcoholism. He's got a lot of good songs, and may be hard to track down online, but check out some of the early stuff . My favourite is "I Think I'll Just Sit Here and Drink", and also listen to "Mama Tried" (which may be one of the best country songs of all time), "Workin' Man's Blues" and "Kentucky Gambler".
Loretta Lynn is the master of the broken hearted song. She did a really good album with jack white of the White Stripes recently, but also check out her 60s and 70s songs. Start with "Coal Miner's Daughter", "Rated-X" or her amazing cover of Patsy Cline's "She's Got You".
The Gambler is the only Rogers song I like. :P You should listen to more of him, he's the only country singer besides Garth Brooks that I listen to. Also, his version of "somethings burnin" is great as well.[QUOTE="RushMetallica"]Kenny Rogers -Coward of the county Kenny Rogers - Daytime friends and nightime lovers Great songs.Pirate700
I listen to all of those except Lynn and Haggard. You guys are missing some of the best stuff out there...

I don't really consider Paisley Country anymore. He sung some great songs when he first got started but now they all sound like rock.

Paisly is 100% country. :|Most every band listed falls into 2 categories:
1. Old country (ok)
2. "Pop" country (utter crap...aka Britney Spears Country Music)
I would advise Texas Country ($tyle not necessarily location)
Examples:
Aaron Watson
Bleu Edmondson
Cory Morrow ***
Cross Canadian Ragweed ***
Eli Young Band ***
Randy Rogers Band ***
Pat Green (older stuff) ***
Reckless Kelly
Roger Creager
Wade Bowen

He is country. The poster is either mistaken or doesn't know what country is. :PHe rides that line sometimes, but he's more country than a lot of what is called country these days. I'm not as concerned about labels as I am about how it sounds, and I think that Paisley is an amazing musician, even if he mixes rock with his country. :)

oh for sure! Cadillac Ranch was one of the most requested songs when I worked at the country music radio station. It's too bad they kinda fell to the wayside over the last 10 years. They made a new album back in 2006, eh?
I said he sang country when he started, his new stuff doesn't sound really country to me. But everyone has their own opinion, and I respect you guys!
Collecian
I'd agree for the most part that he's changed his sound. I don't really care for songs like Celebrity (although I love "Ticks"). "Waitin' on a Woman" is pretty traditional for the country ballad style.

Completely forgot about Dwight Yoakam! So many good songs... "Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose", "1000 Miles From Nowhere", "Long White Cadillac".
And I'll add some alt country to this list, too...Drive-By Truckers, Hayes Carll, Cuff the Duke, Whiskeytown, The Weight, Neko Case.

Neko Case is a good one :) As are Drive By Truckers, and Cuff the Duke. I haven't heard the others, so I'll put them on my list to check out. Also of note would be The Felice Brothers. :P They're like country, only they sound consistently drunk. Please Log In to post.
