And of course there are theories forming...

Here's a link to the transcript between the captain and the Coast Guard

A cruise ship off the coast of Italy was torn asunder by a long, 150-foot gash in its side. Roughly 20 are still missing, and numerous have been found dead. The captain has been arrested -- he bolted from the ship and left hundreds still on board frantically scrambling for their lives.

Thoughts on this? I'm sure OT has heard about this, it's all over the news right now. If there is a thread already, my bad -- I didn't see one though.

I still cracking up about that recording with him making excuses and also the fact that it seems that even the second in command and other officers were on the lifeboat too. A coward indeed.

Heh, yeah I'm seeing the irony. A megalomaniac captain of a ship doomed to failure posting about another sinking ship. I guess this topic was fitting. ;)

That captain is the biggest **** ever. What's even funnier is how his lawyer was saying that it was the captain who responsible for most of the people getting off the ship and he should be commended. This is just before a tape was released of the coast guard ordering him to return to the ship.

It's still bizzare to see a boat that size upended in the water like that in this day and age; it almost looks like a photoshop pic.

Hehhehehe... yeah... *ahem*.. AND TRAGIC... This is a tragedy that could have been averted with a modicum of professionalism on the part of the captain.

Even if he is acquitted (yeah, right  ), he will never command another ship in his life.

His bridge crew needs to be held accountable too. It's their job to steer the ship, and make sure the captain's orders are carried out safely (since the ship ran aground, that failed spectacularly). After the accident, it's their job to evacuate the crew calmly and safely (which, by the accounts I've seen on the news, didn't happen). Throw 'em in the brig with the captain.

I'm trying to figure out how they hit the rocks in the first place. Don't they equip cruise ships with basic sonar and sounding devices? How old were the ship's navigation charts? Costa's got some explaining to do, too.

Apparently the captain didn't know about the dolphin/turtle/porpoise reef sanctuary there. Now lots of environmentalists are pissed at him and his crew too.

Really? They're just piling it on at this point, aren't they? :P

While I'm still thinking about it... how is it that the ship capsized so easily? It would not surprise me if the bige rats got lazy and left watertight doors wide open. Some of the engineering crew are going to be raked over the coals on this one if they failed to respect the watertight integrity rules on the ship (dogging the proper hatches and so forth), and aggravated the partial sinking.

Tragic some died indeed. Unsure how severe of a disaster I would deem it however. A very small number are missing or dead and it ran aground right near land. Overall, compared to what "could" of happened, I'd be more inclined to say it was a surprise how well everything ended up. I know I read somewhere the passengers compared it to the sinking of the Titanic. Compared to the Titanic this was nothing more than an incident.

This story just keeps getting worse.

Apparently the captain didn't even give a call to abandon ship. He mentioned that there was a minor electrical problem "or something" and bailed. He was one of the first off board.

Not nly that but according to some witnesses he jumped on the first lifeboat he saw and covered his headwith a blanket so no one would reconize him. On shore crew members were screaming at him to ge back to the boat and he said everybody is already off..he is a cowardof the highest order and I hope he burns for it. The recordings of him getting reamed by the Port official will be his demise. When I first heard the news I thought they wer crazy to charge him with homicide, then the stories trickled in and I hope he gets hit with a crim neg homicide charge if there is one in Italy.

Just listened to the recording, and two things are clear:

1. The captain is, indeed, a first-class coward. "It's getting too dark to see... the lifeboat engines have stopped and I need to coordinate the rescue..." Each excuse just buries him further.

2. I need to learn Italian. The Coast Guard captain sounds AWESOME cursing that dips*** out.
