Recently, I've been listening to this song on the radio (yes I still listen to the radio) by Pink. Originally I thought the name of the song was called "Perfect". I liked the song and would enjoy it whenever it came on the radio. One day, I decided to listen to it on YouTube. This is when I learned that the real name of the song was called "F****** Perfect" And in the chorus she also uses the curse word.Although it's only a small portion of the song, it kinda bothered me every time I heard it.

I liked the song better when I thought the song didn't have any curse words in it. I just thought it was completely unnecessary. I'm not saying cursing is bad. I do it myself. I just don't use it unnecessarily.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is do you think that curse words are some times unneeded in songs?

What say you, OT?

I think it really depends on the message that is being said in the song. Some songs can really benefit from them and for some it can be there downfall.

A lot of singers today use unnessessary profanity and sexual refrences just to be edgy or something, just look a Kesha, all she ever seems to sing about is sex and all the different ways you can have it when she doesn't need to sing about that stuff at all.

For emphasis or to help the flow of the song. I don't see a problem with curse words being used.

I don't mind the odd one here and there... hardly adds much. And if its absence were noticeable, it'd be too much.

Exactly.

For example I can't even imagine what a song like Outkast's Gasoline Dreams would be like without cursing..

I'm not that big a fan of curse words in general. Using them a lot seems like poor lyrics to me. But some songs do benefit from having curse words like Cee Lo Green's **** You.

I don't think it's to be edgy. That hasn't sold music since the '90s. If anything, I think a lot of artists have toned down so their records will have wider appeal.

Kesha sings about that kinda stuff because it serves a market. There's a reason for raunchy music. It's good to dance to. No one who goes out to clubs wants to hear a song about anything less superficial than drugs and sex.

With some songs, I find myself thinking along the lines of "Really? Did you really need to add that in?" and with others, curse words just seem to fit and the song wouldn't work as well without them.

I think people are a bit immature about them. Its like everything is fine until you hear a curse word. I'm not saying they should be shoveled into every song, because they don't. Some songs just don't need some words. But others benefit from the use. Just like in real life. Limiting the word's use will make it far more meaningful. I can't stand when they're censored out of many songs that sound better with them in instead of some replacement or a bleep.

Depends, if they're whole song is cursing non-stop and has no meaning, than F*** that song (c wut i did thar). But curse words mainly the f word are appropriate in some songs. They are actually really useful adjectives at some points and can sometimes express a strong reaction towards something. Curse words are only offensive to those who take offense to them. Other than that I love em

I think if there's a certain amount of curse words in a song, there shouldn't be a clean version. Sometimes some songs on the radio are just a few words and a long silence because they're censoring the words.

They're useful. Of course you don't need them, but they're interesting and powerful sometimes when they do come up. Generally in songs that aren't by Pink.

(Talking about rock, not rap. In rap it doesn't matter unless you're using curses for easy rhymes all the time.)

I'm fine with them, though some songs probably don't need them.

They often put emphasis into what the vocalist is presenting, whether it be serious, rediculous, or otherwise.

It comes down to this... some people can swear, some can't. They're saying really ugly words, but only some people can make them sound beautiful.

When used in music, for whatever reason I don't like when girls (pop singers, specifically) gravitate towards obnoxious swears. It gives it a tone I don't like to listen to for enjoyment, not that I listen to pop anyway. I don't listen to rap, but I acknowledge some rappers can make it sound completely natural.

What makes a word ugly? There just a compilation of sounds EJACULATED out of the human mouth (typically) unless you have a parakeet whom really annoy me since there's this one in my local pet shop that screams HEELLLLLLLOOOOOOO when you walk in. That's an ugly word.

Actually it's nots.

Words are just words. They're used to express. How one percieves an expression is totally up to them. Curse words are really useful words in my opinion. That doesn't make words not words.

Haha, I don't care either way. I just said "ugly" because society is frightened to death of them.

A ton of my music has swears in it, I swear way too much. But if you're basing a song around swear words (which many young artists seem to do) that just shows a lack of writing ability on your part.

\ That doesn't mean the point is valid. They're just like every other word except some find them offensive. But in reality every word can sound offensive in some way shape or form. And back on topic just like any other word if it's overused in the song than it gets to repetitive and the meaning is differed or set aside. How this puts "curse" words in a seperate category is beyond me. The only reason people find them offensive is because for generations that's the way people percieved them to be. But they're actually useful verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc! Learn to love em. They're not going away.

Because we all know "curses" exist. You don't need to use a "curse" word to "curse" someone. The f word derives from the german saying err. The true meaning is harmless. The BIG BAD C word derives from the celtic irish word hunt which means woman. Generations have misinterpereted these words and over time they became offensive. Saying something is bad just because it has curse in front of it, is not having your own opinion and not looking into the topic.

It's like saying a law is bad because it's a law. Just like (my favorite example) It's illegal to walk backwards on the sidewalk with an Ice cream cone in your back pocket in Kentucky. Which actually is a law.

Think for yourself.

No one gives a damn how the words originated. If they did, there would be no discussion here. They care about the here and now and in this age and time the "curse" are considered bad. That's why you won't get hired for a job if you over use them. Society doesn't want you to use them. Of course that doesn't stop people. I'm one of them. However I know when and where to use them. I'm not going to start an argument with someone on the street because they said they didn't like the language I used. I say "Sorry for the foul language."

Wait wait wait. No one gives a damn how they were originated? That's funny because I do. The here and now doesn't exist. There's ony past and future. You'd have to find the smallest unit of time to measure the present. How they originated is important and who says I scream out curses like a drunken sailor in public anyway. Actually that's pretty acurate

I find cursing unnecessary overall.

I find cursing fun and addictive. Its only a word. If someone gets offended by a simple word, they should seriously get a hold of themselves and shake themselves until they realize its only a word.

EDIT: forgot to say that cursing is never " unnessecary " It's part of the english language... Just like " the " and " and " and "but" and any other word........

I think it really depends on the message that is being said in the song. Some songs can really benefit from them and for some it can be there downfall.

I agree. First of May wouldn't sound the same without the swearing.

But it's unnecessary in a lot of songs, I'll definitely say that.

So answer my question. Both of you. If someone were to curse you out, you would feel no anger towards them whatsoever?

Hypothetically* If someone said they were going to shove the leg of a chair up your pooper would you be intimidated or angry?

Woah how did I do that without cursing, GASP.

And that was never my point as previously stated by me, any words whether they are considered curse words or not can be offensive and ruling certain words out would just make no sense. The point is they are useful and valid in a lot of situations.

they fit in some songs, they don't bother me. the bands i listen to don't really use them. out of the 200+ songs i have on here right now, only a few songs uses them.
