'Dark Knight' may be tough sell at Oscar time. Should genre matter?

This thread isnt as much as should The Dark Knight win, but rather should genre matter when it comes to the Oscars? Especially now as we progress into much more serious superhero films, I believe genre shouldnt effect a films chances at any award. I mean many will say yes it deserves best picture, one side of me says it does, but others who just liked it and liked other films will be upset even if its nominated. I mean critics wise it has at much praise as No Country for Old Men did, and although some will say critics dont matter, it does during Oscar season. I think Ledger should atleast get best supporting actor.

I agree that Ledger should get best supporting actor. Maybe Best Sound aswell (I loved the score) and perhaps cinematography... I can't see it winning Best Picture though - mind you, I haven't heard of a movie that seems Oscar-worthy this year apart from TDK...

I was reading an article about Heath Ledger (Oscar hopeful) and they're saying, most likely he wont win it. They're totally basing this on the fact that there was only one person ever in history to win an Oscar after he died. I forgot the name of the guy. So the chances of Heath winning an Oscar is slim to none. They also added that just because he died, doesnt increase his chances of winning. The Academy just doesnt see it in that light. Which I think is sad. Heath should win best supporting actor, and I will still root for him.

I dont really care what genre the movie is in, as long as it was a great performance, the actor deserves a chance at gold.

well you have to understand that the Academy is so dis-illusioned and different than most people in the country, that their opinion is rarely respectable. Atleast IMO. I've never really put much stock into the Academy Awards, but I think Heath Ledger has a much better shot at supporting actor, than TDK has at best picture

If a movie is really really good and surpasses many other movies, it should get recognition for it at an award show for movies, IMO...

I think that is absolutly ludacris. TDK is the years best movie so far, it is criticaly acclaimed and did extreamly well in the box office. It was dark, poetic, humurous, action packed, and had food for though , an oustanding script but most of all fantastic acting. Joker stole the show but Christian Bail did a great job as well. Its really sad that this movie will be out-classed simply because of genre. Even if this movie was better im sure typical love story drama will snatch the awards...

are you serious. yes he does deserve an oscar for his part but to say its sad that the academy wont base their decision on the fact that he is dead and it would mean a lot to a lot of people if he did win is just rediculous. and sometimes its overdone. somehow Johnny Cash still manages to win awards and the guys been dead for almost what 3 years now

The thing about the Academy is they respect independent films or more artsy films rather than the big budger blockbusters. Although there are exceptions (Titanic), I think this will make The Dark Knight a tough sell...

Genre shouldn't matter. So long as it fufills the appropriate criteria to win, it should... however, at this point in the year Wall E should win Best picture... Although come Feb another film might have taken that spot.

Yeah, when I read it, I was surprised. The only person to ever win an Oscar after their death was Peter Finch. Oscar watchers and veteran critics are saying that fans are the ones to blame for hyping this all up.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/02/film.ledger.oscarbuzz.ap/index.html?iref=newssearch

I'll be the optimist and say he wins. I dont care what those critics say.

And BTW, I'm not saying he should win best supporting because he died, I just think he did a really good job that no other actor could have pulled off so well.....

oh i agree with you. And I think TDK is definitely deserving of Best Makeup. The makeup helped in creating one of the creepiest characters in cinema in the new millenium

I don't think he deserves it yet... there are several other films that I think might well have better supporting performances coming out this year...

I know. Transformers should've won best CG effects (or whatever it's called). It lost. To The Golden Compass of all movies. Giant transforming robots lost to polar bears.

Good movie, but not best picture material. There have been much better movies this year imo. Transsiberian, Elegy, The boy in the striped Pajamas, In Bruges, and Burn after reading is out soon.

Milk looks to be the best film of the year at this point. Although I have faith in Appalooza.

I don't think it should matter what genre a film is for it to win. Although I don't think "The Dark Knight" should get the best film award, I do think that Heath Ledger should win best supporting actor.

I trulely believe ledger should win best supporting actor, not becouse hes dead but becouse he was really brilliant. i also think TDK should get best sound, costume, and cineamatography.

though i dought it will get enything since the acadamy only gives awards to artsy independent films...

Although this is a superhero movie, I don't consider to be one. Not only because it doesn't feel as cheesy as other superhero movies (Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man), but it just feels like an awesome action movie instead.

Anyways, Oscars never meant a movie was good. I mean Titanic won loads of them and that movie is average at best.

I would have no problem nominating it for Best Picture. Whether it wins or not depends what else comes out by the end of the year. Clint Eastwood has a new film coming out ...lol.

It would be great if Dark Knight won best picture and Health Ledger got Best actor. I have a feeling it wont. If its not a drama or a romance movie, any other movie would have a disadvantage winning best picture.
