Well I got my first speeding ticket after four years of driving (doing 82 in a 65 zone near Sacramento). How many of you guys (or gals) have gotten tickets?

Its only your fault for speeding and don't say the darn cops or i have to arrest you Internet style  If i do have to arrest you am bring Dawg the bounty hunter with me.
I see it all the time when I am driving. Cops will ALWAYS hand out tickets. Salaries need to get paid.

Hate to break it to you chap, but if Law enforcement was a free job, then nobody would join. These people have to feed themselves or their families if they have a family I suppose. Yes you have a kind heart, I understand. But things just don't work that way in this world.I've gotten two: One for going 92 in a 65 (my speedometer said 85) and one for going 50 in a 35. The first one, a cop was waiting behind an overpass on a highway. I didn't mind that one, I've slowed down a bit since then. Still, going on an open highway you can probably do 15-20 over without worrying, as long as you slow down when you get closer to cities. I went from Chicago to Pensecola doing 85 the entire way and back and didn't get a ticket, I just slowed down around cities.
The other one kinda pissed me off. I was taking a way home from schoolI don't usually take, I was just coming away from going downhill, it was one of the first nice days of the season, I had my window down, the radio was playing a good song, and the guy next to me was going the exact same speed, and the cop caught me in a speed trap. I usually don't break 10 over on local roads and I wasn't driving recklessly, it was just a cop trying to meet a quota.

*Hands speeding ticket* If you don't like it go and talk to dawg right over there.
*snip* it was just a cop trying to meet a quota.

This is what I hate. Law enforcement looks at tickets as a source of income now, instead of it being a way to regulate traffic. The intent of traffice fines is just to regulate traffic, not make a ton of money on it. But I guess they gotta make their money somehow, because otherwise they would just raise taxes.
As a general rule of thumb, obey speed limits exactly in cities and construction zones, and never speed by more than 10 km/h on highways, and you won't run into trouble. I've been driving for more than a decade, and I've never worried about getting a speeding ticket, let alone being pulled over. Arriving at your destination a few minutes earlier isn't worth the extra gas you burn and the risk of being handed a fine, which will probably cost you on your insurance too.
I know a few cops and most of them go after the people who drive like idiots, swerving in and out of lanes, cutting people off, and the like. This cop did not seem like one of those guys. He was real standoffish with me even when giving me the ticket. No, "did you know how fast you were going," which I actually didn't or else I would have slowed down, just license and registration, you were speeding, here's your ticket. I usually find with cops that I either get along pretty well with them or I just flat out don't like them, and this guy seemed like the latter. Either way, though, they don't set their own quotas. I don't like it either, but that's a problem at the administrative level and you're never going to change that. Especially in my area, it's an old people/families with kids area so they're never going to LOWER quotas.
Ya, I'm going to start doing that now. That $200 ticket is a great source of motivation :PAs a general rule of thumb, obey speed limits exactly in cities and construction zones, and never speed by more than 10 km/h on highways, and you won't run into trouble. Never gotten one :) Just go with the flow of traffic and make sure you're not the fastest one in the pack.

That's what I do. Tell a Chicago driver to only ever go 10 over and they'll laugh at you 9/10 times. As long as you're just following/pacing you're fine.
I used to defend cops until I got a ticket for running a red light, despite the cop admitting I hadn't run a red, I just would have "had the light not turned green when I arrived at the intersection". She refused to repeat that when I got my voice recorder on my phone out.D3nnyCrane
Yeah, that's a tough one. She is right - if the light hadn't changed and you weren't slowing down, you would have blown through the intersection on a red... but then you technically didn't break the law, and if you were watching the other light carefully, this isn't an issue. Did you fight it?
Never have. Then again, I tend not to go 17 miles over the speed limit...chessmaster1989Hey Hey... I have a perfectly valid excuse (just can't remember it right now, I'll get back to you).

I've never gotten a speeding ticket (have gotten two other traffic citations though). I'm absolutely amazed at that fact considering I always go at least 30 MPH over the speed limit on the highway, have to go through two counties known for speed traps on my daily commute, and have seen cops using radar/ladar guns on multiple occasions and yet I've still never been caught (knock on wood). I guess it's because traffic is usually pretty heavy so those radar guns are pretty useless except for tagging cars in the lane closest to the cop.
And as for people saying speeding only gets you to a destination a few minutes early: on my daily commute going the speedlimit would make my commute take about an hour. When I speed I can get up there in about 30 minutes.
I still don't get speed limits, speed doesn't kill. JigglyWiggly_Well it does increase the probability of something bad happening, and lets face it, the vast majority of drivers are HORRIBLE (at least American drivers).

The stupidity is I WAS slowing down by taking my foot off the accelerator, but I saw the opposite lights turn red and was 20m from the intersection - NO WAY to possibly run it, and there was no cars behind me so I don't know how she could have seen a thing. And I didn't cos there's no point, it woulda been me vs her.[QUOTE="pianist"][QUOTE="D3nnyCrane"]I used to defend cops until I got a ticket for running a red light, despite the cop admitting I hadn't run a red, I just would have "had the light not turned green when I arrived at the intersection". Of course not, but you just increase your chances of a cop actually pulling you over the more you go above the speed limit...

During my work experience at the law courts a guy's fine was upheld despite showing that the red light camera was clearly faulty. They didnn't even try hide the contempt for the guy daring to not bend over and take administered "justice". It's not a conspiracy theory - they break laws to rake revenue.[QUOTE="D3nnyCrane"][QUOTE="pianist"]

True, but lets say that a cop is having a bad day or needs to fulfill his quota, he most likely will pull people over for much more minor offenses.Once, for going 101 mph (it was really 120, the cop just caught me when I was slowing down) in a 55 mph zone.Dark__LinkWay to raise the bar! :D

While we're swapping stories, I was doing 140km/h coming home from a funeral (I know, but I was not thinking straight). I was clocked doing 115 only because the cop got my speed while I was slamming my brakes on. And I'd feel guilty but as I've said, I have gradually lost all respect for the pigs.[QUOTE="chessmaster1989"][QUOTE="D3nnyCrane"] Way to raise the bar! :DD3nnyCrane
