Accidentally put this in the GGD, meant to put in in here... sorry mods!

Anyway, for an 80's movie, it was well done, one of the better Submarine flicks out there. It was the first war movie that I saw that didn't stereotype Germans in WWII. It's in German, had to watch with English subtitles.. Very good though.

Haven't seen it, though I've heard that it's good from a lot of people, so I really should check it out.

I really need to watch it. You should watch The Downfall too, very good German movie about WW2, mostly about Hitler as well.

Fun fact: Das Boot was not initially conceived to be a feature film at all, it was adapted from episodes of a TV mini-series. That's what I've heard anyways. Great movie though, one of my fav WWII flicks. Gotta buy it again, my friend stole it from me! :x

I have seen it and own the Director's Cut version of it. Very well done and more true to the German sub service than the movie U-571.

Das Boot is one of the greatest anti-war films ever made.

I think I watched one of the 4 hour cuts. I really enjoyed it (from what I remember, it was a while ago). More movies like it need to be made. Everyone views the German's during WWII as a single, "evil" entity... but the majority of the non-SS Wehrmacht were just people fighting for their country, and didn't necessarily agreed with what Hitler thought was good.

I want to see a good, modern Rommel movie.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend viewing The Iron Cross and Stalingrad. Both fall into the frame you've mentioned.

I watched it - the dubbed version. It's also known as "Depth Charge Galore".

I seriously think Das Boot is overrated. Beerfest also keeps making references to it which makes it more annoying

Beerfest sucked. I remember turning it off because it was so painfully unfunny.

Thanks for the feedback.

As I've said before, it was one of the few movies that didn't stereotype germans as 'The Nazis'.

My grandfather (former german soldier), had enlisted in the German army when he was seventeen, to avoid conscription. He was just a frightened kid with a gun; his only wish was to live through it.

I think that some people forget.. that on both sides, at the front lines, it's no longer one 'good' army vs. one 'bad' army. It's man vs. man.

Great movie, I was also at Bavaria film studios in Munich, where they shot most of the thing. You can go inside the mock-up sub and everything.
