Now if only Geithner could do the same. I don't understand why 0bama, who seemed so serious about vetting possible nominees, doesn't crack down on these tax-dodgers. Even CNN is calling this a violation of his ethics vow.

"Tom made a mistake, which he has openly acknowledged. He has not excused it, nor do I. But that mistake, and this decision, cannot diminish the many contributions Tom has made to this country, from his years in the military to his decades of public service. Now we must move forward, with our plan to lift this economy and put people back to work," Obama said in a statement.

Yea saw this on BBC. It makes me angry these slime balls can get away with (im sure they arent the only ones) not paying taxes (and such an astronomical amount), but then i start to wonder; why didnt any members of the Bush administration withdraw when the American people finally figured out they were led into a war based on lies?

That's a shame.

Daschel would've made a fine HHS.

Oh well, I trust that Obama will appoint another very capable HHS :)

Because the GWB Admin kept changing the reasons why we went to war in Iraq.

Just for kicks he should name Howard Dean as Daschle's replacement. Dean is a medical doctor, after all.

I tried to make a thread similar to this, but apperantly I shuold have elaborated. I was speaking of Obamas character to nominate people such as these who try to duck not paying taxes. I think this goes to the hart of the matter. If the leader of this country doesn't personally vet each of cabinet nominee's and find out who they really are and what their background looks like, he's worhtless as a leader. I had to go through tougher checks to get in the military. I had to pay every bill past and present, and that incudes back debts, which I didn't have. The comments by Obama and his PR people just made me sick. If this man is this naive, he's not fit to lead.

Well, this is interesting. Obama said in response to his nominating Daschle and Nancy Killefer (another tax-dodging lib), "I screwed up." It's interesting that this is what he thinks his mistake was, when the real issue is how he continues to stick up for Geithner, who can never be trusted by American tax payers to do his job. If 0bama is serious about making things right and admitting his errors, then he needs to dump Geithner. Now.

A tax fraud in charge of the IRS is political ammunition. Tom would have actually been able to reform the health care system towards Obama's platform, and Republicans don't want that. Geitner will get heat from media, but politicians won't touch him. All that being said, let's cut the crap with the comparisons. Bush is no longer president. Obama's flaws shouldn't be excused with a mutter of, "At least it's not Bush...". Obama is the current reality and should be judged by his actions, not compared to another administration with fundimentally different agendas. Obama made a good step in his apology. I've actually been somewhat pleased with his bipartisan appointments. Personally, I think that Congress is going to have a Hay day cause they have "an inside man" and Obama is going to be the DNC's puppet for the next 4 years. I'd like to see him start to challenge Congress. Hopefully, he'll learn from this and become a better leader for it. I really hope that he makes me eat my words.

Not only are we going to advise the President on matters of public health, we're going to advise him on matters of welfare and food inspection and medicare and medicaid and drug regulation! And we're going to advise him on matters of disabilities and financial aid and vaccinations and community initiatives! And then we're going to Washington DC to take back the White House! YEEEARGH!!!

Yep, bad choices on his part. Anyway, as soon as I saw this, I thought "Well, that's another thread that will be started by Mysterylobster today " Anyway, at least he's willing to admit mistakes, which is quite a departure from what we've seen from the Executive office in recent memory.

The one good thing about this whole affair is that it gave America the opportunity to laugh at Tom Daschle again, something we haven't done since he was booted from the Senate.

Because they had convinced themselves the were not lying. Sorta like when you get caught not paying your taxes, in their minds they did nothing wrong...Oooppss,I forgot. Oooppss, I'd like to kick their collective asses!

It was a mistake; I've heard some say Daschle withheld that information from Obama, and some say that Obama did not properly vet Daschle. Which it is, we will probably never know, although I'm inclined to give Obama the benefit of the doubt after such a thorough vetting of his VP, Joe Biden. I honestly don't see the problem with Geithner. It happened several years ago, and has not recurred. So, what's the issue?

Well, if you think politcs is funny. This isn't about the idiot in the classroom anyroom, this is peoples lives and settign double standards is the root of the problem. Most people that don't pay their taxes have severe panalty's leveed against them, and quite possibly jail time. I forgot does not cut it, and unless Obama wants to change the laws so that it's every Americans right to not pay taxes, they'd better start enforcing the laws.

When it happened is a moot point, but tax evasion in 2005 is still tax evasion. It draws into question their character and their ability to provide excellent results. We've seen Clinton get through even with the conflict of interest and we've seen Geitner get through even with the taxes. Add both of those to the fact that Daschle's main concern was going to be health care reform (a particularly split issue and very possibly the best launching pad that the republicans have for their recovery) and Daschle has just too much pushing the opposite direction.

Everything and I do mean literally everything is a matter of degree. There IS a difference between me forgetting to pay my 401k tax withdraw until two years later (which I did) and never paying taxes and putting EXPLICT lies on a tax form.

Sorry, life has a matter of degrees.

and poltically what the president is doing here is removing people from the list the second its clear its going to turn into an insane 3 month debate over the ethics of not declaring tips when someone was a waiter so that he can find someone else and get down to work. The TRICK here that the rebublicans are not seeing is that ANYONE they suggest into any power that has has ever taken a tip that was not declared is going to be removed from the table becuase they will look silly having a debate about it.

its a good technique, and it acutally puts the rebublicans in a more difficult position than if he had decided to continue with the debate.

Daschle stepped down on his own (seemingly). Obama supported him all the way to yesterday. There isn't any trick. Daschle is a DEMigod (get it?). He weened Obama when he was fresh in congress. Republicans can make suggestions all they want, but Obama makes the appointments. More importantly, Daschle's appointment was the best chance of Obama successfully completing his vision for medical reform. This is defintely a hinderance to Obama, not the republicans.

To all you waiters and football fans

If you dont declare your cash tips on your taxes you are breaking tax laws

If you bet on a football pot you are gambling which is illegal in most states is it not?

Sue me. The people driving the country sould be held to a higher standard. It's a matter degrees.

...you're wrong! :P

chessmaster1989

He's wrong about there being an apostrophe in the title, but he's right about it being the best game of all time. But that's a discussion for another board.

...you're wrong!

Okay, fine, back to the main point...

Tom Daschle evolved from a cookie :o.

Classic guys, Ilove it. I always thought it was pronounced Eeees, that's why I put that in:oops:

Oh, brother:roll: your daft. I do know people that served for tax evasion. Just because you know "A" person does not make you an expert. That is what I am saying.

Jandurin

Dude, seriously. It's called reading comprehension.

Obviously your not comprehending what I'm writing then. Back to the topic

You hate when people say, "I know a guy"? But how else do you expect them to relate experiences that they themselves did not experience?

You actually think that Dashle and Richardson both steped down before the hearing began without some strong advice from Obama?

Perhaps and at first I though it was just Richardson wanting goverment to move along and not be distracted now I am having second thought.

Rebublicans CAN try to place anyone they want into power what I am saying is that they are going to look stupid, petty and hypocrtical to move forward on it if the canidate has anyone even suggesting tax evasion.

Dont you see the play here? Obama is killing the conversation before it even begins leaving the other side at a great handy cap.

Think it thru. "look at the whole board' as they say

The advice goes both ways. I don't doubt that it was a move decided amongst a group. I also know that Obama and the Democratic congress were still vowing to get him through as late as yesterday. It very much is a decision based on not gunking up the works. Obama needs to retain his approval rating and a string of tax dodgers in his cabinet are going to kill that. Not to mention the fact that Obama ran on a campaign that promised bi-partisan solutions, and we are yet to see Congress following this directive (for examples see the Lily Ledbetter Bill and the bill that should be approved today after being struck down by Bush twice and the split in the voting results for the Stimulis bill in the House). You can imagine it's a play, but the very same hinderance ties the hands of the Dems now too. Don't imagine that your Golden Boy isn't capable of a wrong move.
