I disagree. There have been many times in history when a debate has led to a change in opinion. :D

I changed my mind over abortion after once being a pro-choicer. I am now a pro-life extremist.

I think it depends on the debate. Some folks idea of a debate is just a shouting match. Others discuss their ideas in details that can expand both side's understanding of their positions and sometimes open doors for compromises.

you can have a civilized debate,of course but that too won't change things, they can agree on topics, but disagree on methodology like the American presidential debate, for example

Yeah... they do. A debate can easily be won by someone who provides the most evidence to support their point.

Not true, Ive been open for interpretation on my ideas on life before. You just have to make sense and be realistic for me to conform with your ideals though. You also have to not be stubborn and realise you arent always right and be open to biggere and better realisations than what you already know. I'm not sure this post makes sense..

Perhaps the purpose of a debate is not for the group debating to change their minds, but rather influence the outside world watching.

I have changed my mind many times during debates/discussions/arguments/whatever, I'm not so arrogant as to believe I am right on absolutely everything.

if a person debates long enough and after soem time begins looking at the evidence supporting the other side they may change. There have been many instances where this occurred.

The real point, IMO, is not to really change someone's mind. It's to express your point of view (very important to most of us) and hopefully the other person or persons will see the other side of the discussion.

This. An arguement between the two parties more than likely will just cause more resentment towards the differing opinion, while a civil debate can spark actual intelligent discussion, and can lead to compromises.

Debates rarely result in one of the two parties changing their mind. Since both sides are in vehement support of their position their minds are essentially made-up. Sometimes people do change their viewpoints after a debate though, but it usually takes awhile.

The real point of a debate is to give the audience a good understanding of the issue at hand, and hopefully convince them that your position is the correct/best one.
