i assume no life means someone lazy, who has given up the efforts and just cries about the bad things happened to him/her. i assume get a life is for them meaning to get up and start making effort towards a better future right?

The term is meaningless. It is meant to make people feel bad about certain things they love or obsess over. If anyone ever tells you to get a life, it probably means they want you to reevaluate what you are doing and try to be "normal". Well, tell them what makes their life so much better than yours?

Both are derogatory as TheManofTin states. I would rather be told to get a life than to have said you have no life. It is really just because no sounds more negative I guess.

if i ever use those terms, it's talking about someone who spends too much time doing something, usually something internet or gaming related. for example, i was playing Star Wars: The Old Republic earlier, and a guy said he just reached level 50. i checked and he had no in fact reached level 50, but if he really did, then i would have thought to myself "wow, he must have had no life the past few days" :P

Basically this. but "Get A Life" and "You Have No Life" sound a lot harsher then "do something worthwhile" or "do something productive"

That is still not for them to judge.

People who say it have basically run out of insults. Regardless, "no life" generally equates to lying around and not giving a f*** about anything. "Get a life" means to "get more active and do more things that are interactive," as I see it. I could be completely off, but whatever.

Aren't you the twit who wants a slave for a wife? So, in your case, "Get a sex-toy, avoid people" would be the maxim... ideally you'd avoid a life.

I was waiting outside the room for our teacher to arrive and I was talking to my friend about COD. This stuck up girl just comes up and says, "Seriously, get a life."

So apparently even talking about games means you have no life ...

All I know is I got suspended for saying it to someone on sw a few years ago really though it's just nonsense and pretty underwhelming. Insults only get interesting when they get the "your momma" jokes on the go because mr t turns up and says "treat yo momma right".

TheManofTin

This ^ is pretty much what it means to me. It seems most commonly used by girls who want some dude to leave 'em alone and go obsess over something else.

BTW, lovin' the avatar ManofTin.

I usually say it to people on video games that have 15 days played on a game that hasn't even been out for a month.

they seriously need to get a life, it's not good for them to be sitting at home all day playing CoD, eating and sleeping, and not having contact with the outside world for longer then it takes to take the trash out.

Seriously, some people need to get lives. Playing CoD is not a life.

People who use it OL are complete idiots. It's a last resort that says "I lose and I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel." Those who boast about having a life now must have been utterly worthless at one point. I wish slow painful deathsa on people who use it.

Almost worse are those who justify having a life to anyone who has used that line on them, instead of doing the right thing by telling them to kill themselves.

Over here (In the UK), when someone's told to "get a life", it usually means that they are seen as either unsociable or overly academic. People with interests which may be considered 'nerdy' by some are targets of the meaningless insult. I find that the people who use the term, in my experience, are the people that really will have a pitiful life in 10-20 years time; therefore it's best to just laugh it off.

Both are idiotic terms used by people when they have no rational argument or want to rationalize how much they suck in a video game. I just assume anybody who uses those terms in any video games is jealous, especially when it came to World of Warcraft (which I'll be using as an example since I haven't seen it much in other games.)

"Wow dude, you pulled 5k DPS more than me? I could havedone that, but unlike you I have a life."

That's basically the only context it was ever used in. It's just an excuse to make people feel better about sucking in a video game and not taking what little effort there is to learn about the class they were playing. You have a life, thereforeyou can't take five minutes to read up on your class so you don'twaste the time of the other four people in your group? Right.
