So I go to talking with a neighbor who just graduated high school, and somehow we got to talking about libraries and I mentioned the dewey decimal system. He had no idea what that was. Neither did his sister, who is grade 10. WTF? This was REQUIRED knowledge to pass the 6th grade when I was in school. How can people be graduating High School without knowing how to use a library? Is this system still taught in schools, or am I just a relic of a bygone era?

Well I certainly don't know it, but I know of it. Keeps libraries in order, number system, blah blah. Sounds pretty idiotic to have never heard of it though (In the graduates case, not the 10 year old, she's 10.)

Oh, goodness. It's that cabinant looking thing with all the cards in it that you look through to find out where the book you want is. Like these. They're in the front of every library.

She's not 10, she's in grade 10.

Whoops, my bad. She should know of it, too. I'm a junior...

I mean, it has a funny name. Dewey Decimal System? How can someone have never heard of it.

Back in the 80's when I was still in elementary school, it was taught from grades 4 through 6, every year. We were told 'The Junior High School doesn't want students who don't know how to use a library.'

Reminds me of cursive writing. Grade school teachers would swear up and down that they would make us write cursive everything in High School. I can write in cursive, but the only time I use it is my signature and when I took the SAT, we had to write a Terms of Agreement type thing and sign it.

We were forced to use cursive in high school. :( Other than my signature I haven't used it since.

not at my high school, everything orgarnized by catagory, no book has any numbers on the spine. but my friends high school still has the numbers so they still use the dewey decimel system, but even though they use it i doubt they know what it is.
