Did Jesus spend 3 days in hell after his death on the cross? The apostles creed makes it sound that way, but the bible has little support of it. Where did Jesus really spend those 3 days?

The Apostles Creed

1. I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:

2. And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:

3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary:

4. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell:

5. The third day he rose again from the dead:

6. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:

7. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead:

8. I believe in the Holy Ghost:

9. I believe in the holy catholic church: the communion of saints:

10. The forgiveness of sins:

1l. The resurrection of the body:

12. And the life everlasting. Amen.

wrong translation. There is no "He descended into hell" in line 4.

5. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.

EDIT - The main problem is that there is like a million versions of writings because its been translated/rephrased like a million times.

I went to Catholic school and they told me his spirit went to hell for three days. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

Must have been a surprise for Jesus seeing as he was Jewish and didn't believe in hell...

I could see that but even if the translation is wrong, it still does not answer where he spent his three days which is the underlying question.

Yeah, and LOTR doesn't explain the stories of Frodo's children. Maybe someone will add a chapter to the bible, clearing things up?

...I was told that's how the story goes. He descended into hell and broke open the gates, taking those who were faithful to God before Jesus' time on earth. Since they came before Jesus, they were unable to go to heaven. That sounds fair, right?

Well apparently there is a Passion of the Christ: Extended Version but Mel Gibson is holding off on releasing it until he really needs the $$, so who knows what answers that might provide!!! ~ GPS

He didn't have to spend those three days anywhere, as in a literal place. He may of just simply been dead.

My ancient and classical humanities professor gave a hypothetical scenerio where Jesus didn't actually. He was just in a coma or near death state. He fled and lived out his days to the west of Rome in hiding. The odd part was, she said she was a Christian.

This would make sense.

He lived by his own word, and taught it to others.

The concept of Hell contradicts the benevolence of God.

Why support the concept of Hell, if scripture barely does...

Well folks, it looks like a 2 way tie so far between3 days in hell and 3 days in alternative universe playing mario cart. I am torn now, didn't think it would be so close. Hopefully more voters tune in. This isn't a large enough sample size to determine a conclusion anyways.

In numerous films and books and shows I've read that time in hell is percieved differently 1 day here= 100 years there or 10 years or a year I can't remember Anyway, not the best proof but if that's true then he spent quite a number of years there whiel still being 3 days here

If you solely base it on the bible, then no. If you use evidence of Jesus other than the bible then, wait there is no evidence of jesus outside of the bible.

Yes... assuming Hell is a literal place and Jesus was more than just a man. However, I do not believe either of those requirements can be met.

Fighting Satan on his own turf, clearing Hell of all souls. This is a concept in Christian theology known as the "Harrowing of Hell".

Do you reckon in those three days he was made to eat oysters and waste money?

Also, sending your son down to fight Satan and die for everyone's sins, only to let Satan beat him up for three days and not have his back. Ultimate dick move.

PLEASE, lets turn this thread into a LOTR trivia thread.

So, I would love to live in Hobbiton. I wonder if the beers/ale the hobbits drank tasted better than the ones we have around. Perhaps a bit more magical.

Documented meaning "made up hundreds of years later"? It's more than likely that "Jesus" didn't do any of the things the bible say he did or that he existed at all. There may have been a travelling prophet that performed "acts of healing" with the use of herbal medicine (the clay on the blind man's eyes comes to mind, which is a completely viable scenario if the man had some sort of infection and was not born blind as the bible says) but even that is questionable considering the historical records that we have. Particularly census records, which actually happened years after the bible said it did. I could go on for days about the inconsistencies/fallacies in the bible and the reasonable explanations for many of the "miracles" that Jesus performed.
