So today I went for a job interview at a Service Rig Co. (which I got the job by the way). And I couldn't help but notice something.

Before I went to the interview (my dad had to drive me, my car is on the fritz :() he took me to his workplace, which is basically a formal business, and I shook hands with a few different people, and said introduced myself. What I noticed was, incredibly formal, everyone is over the top polite and happy, and choose their words carefully.

In High School, I worked at a gas station, both as a clerk and gas pump attendant (after enough years, the boss trusted me enough to close the store alone, something no student has been trusted to do before in the history of that place). And it was less formal, but still polite as ever, and still people chose their words carefully and respected eachother.

Now, as soon as I went in for this interview, my new boss took one look at me and said "Son of a *****, you're a big one! How the hell's it going?!" Then he said I got the job (instantly :P) and gave me the papers and looked through them and noticed some of them were missing and said "Well for "F" sakes, some God **** papers are missing, fill these ****ers out and I'll get the other ones." He then left and came back about 15 minutes later and as I was filling them out, he was saying comments like "It's incredibly ****in' cold out there, you gotta dress for it," and "We gotta get you to do a piss test (rather than a drug test)" and similar comments.

These are, basically the varied types of personalities I worked with. Very formal, semi-formal and casual. Personally I prefer my new boss, I can say something that might get frowned upon in other places, and he won't care, and he seems to be a very good natured person, just with a colorful language vocabulary. What kind of personality do you prefer to work with or be around?

If you ask me, I am going to enjoy the people at my job, I think it's just going to be a bunch of laid back guys, who work hard and like to party hard too. I'm excited to start on monday.

I'm not really sure. I think it's basic human behavior that peoples behavior changes once the social environment has also altered. And there was a chance in the environment in your case.

Anyways, all I really know is that a conventional work environment is not for me.

Working in NY will introduce you to all types of people from different backgrounds. I have met some truly insane individuals whose behavior would curl your hair.

I work in the television industry and for the most part, there are some really cool people, but damn there are some real jerks running around.

I get along well with co-workers, so long as they don't complain to me, that is truly all I ask. That being said, I couldn't see myself working in fast-food or anywhere the general consensus is "this job sucks".

The people I worked with were sort of backstabbers. They'd act polite, but there was so much lateral arguing going on. I was an intern. I was basically smack in the middle of it. They act nice around each other. Then one person would ask me to do something the other didn't want done and vice versa. Often I'd get asked odd questions that made it obvious they were trying to dig up some dirt. I want to work with people that are generally not too uptight. You're boss there sounds like he'd be great to work for. I think I'd be too paranoid if I worked with someone that enforced a lot of rules.

I have worked in most of those environments before and now I mainly try to look for casual workplaces since I'm in IT most of the places are pretty casual to semi-formal which is good because you still have to take work seriously but yet you are able to clown around and be yourself in front of your co-workers and your boss.

I wouldn't bet on every place being as formal as it seems. Most places lighten up as you get to know them.

My first boss at A&W -he was amazing. He was such a cool guy who'd give you the shirt off his back and he really easy to talk to. Whenever I worked with him he was always in this contagious, upbeat, good mood. He also worked really hard himself, sometimes I'd show up for my shift and I could see beads of sweat dripping down his face.

The team I'm currently in has a good mix of people. Our Head is a Retired Air Force Wing Commander, so, the first impression I got of him was that this guy was gonna be a tough cookie. But he's really easy going around his team. Now it has only been a month since I joined the team but I guess I can gauge this much by his usual behavior. He's exceptionally intelligent and has worked real hard to get to such a top position. He expects the same from his team but he's not too harsh when we mess up. On the contrary, our Team Lead is one guy who'll have fun when HE wants to. Although he's a brilliant guy as well, he usually finds things to complain about, stresses a bit too much on formality and usually politicizes non-issues within the team.

That's how I feel, while the work my be physically harder, and I'm betting that after my first shift on monday, I'm gonna be sore, the people out there are good guys. The cool part is, my buddy helped me get the job, and I'm on the rig that he was on, so I'll be workin' with a few of the same people, he warned me that my supervisor is probably going to yell at me a lot at the start, but that I shouldn't take it to heart.

I work at a grocery store and everyone seems to think that the world owes them something for working in retail. They keep saying that they deserve more money and benefits.
