I'm just wondering gamespot's views on child discipline. Whenever I see a child acting out in a store and themother refusing to control it, I feel like smacking that child across the cheek and telling that mom that she's a faliure as a parent. Some people think these days that hitting a child is wrong and sends a bad message. Now, I personally think that's BS unless you're abusing a child. What do you think?

Yes, discipline the child. Proverbs 13:24 states, "He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him."

Kids are kids.... :? They'll act out just because it's their nature. I don't mind if someone disciplines their children, but hitting them is going too far.

There is a pretty thick line between discipline and hitting a kid... I'm all in favor of discipline.

I'm an Asian, ergo if my kids get below an A+ on tests they get a whooping. :x On a more serious note, yes I believe children need discipline. Kids these days just seem more spoiled and rude these days. So many of them curse like sailors and disregard adult figures its ridiculous. Discipline is needed.

Its nice to use discipline or even mention that word to future parents, but any of them will hide a lot of measures under the word "discipline". I don't think that such vague and unspecified measures/opinions/thoughts are enough.

And of course as chessmaster said, kids are kids. And that again comes down to what each (future) parent thinks a kid should act like. These are very dangerous "fields" imo.

Smacking and hitting should be used as a last resort. I don't think it should be a regular punishment. Baning smacking, as there is a movement towards in Britain, is just laughable though.

There seems to be a misunderstanding that "discipline" means "child abuse"... Honestly, a spanking has always done more goodthan bad.

Yeah I agree. I wouldn't want kids being hit but a form of punishment needs to be exacted on a child when they're misbehaving.

This is the answer I would support. Yes, screaming children in public are annoying. Yes parents who allow their children to act like that are terrible. But advocating hitting a kid is just sick.

I thinks instilling manners and morals are important than instilling discipline.

Oh THAT type of discipline. No, I'm against it. I think people who get spanked end up being more violent. I was spanked and didn't turn out violent, but many people I meet who go "I was spanked and I turned out okay" I go "um, yeaaaahhh....".

My brother spanks my baby sisters, they still pull each others hair everyday and he still insists that whites are stupid because they don't beat their children...

Kids need to be spanked, regardless of their behavior. It doesn't matter if they've been bad or good. Sometimes, you just need to remind them who's boss.

If you're a parent worth being called a "parent", then you have to discipline your children. Doesn't mean you have to lay a finger on them, but you have to utilize some sort of system to teach them manners, respect, good behavior, etc.

Of course you have to discipline your children...but discipline comes in many varieties....I've never struck my child (spankings)...but I've never had to..(I'd save that for something so deathly bad that there is no other alternative)....you have to set expectations with children and make sure they follow through....luckily my kids are exteremely well behaved......but I feel it's because of the time that my wife and I puts into it...

i see white kids bully their parents around all the time but i dont think that makes them stupid.... maybe they're just bad parents. i know from my own experiences and from what i've seen in others... spankings across the backside straighten the child up, at least for a while. but, it should be done in Private and not in public. talking to the kidz and taken away their favorite toys can be discipline enough but if he/she is throwing tantrums in public and the parents cant seem to regulate it ...then imo they are failing at parenting, or need to start using the belt to the buttock technique before itz too late. better the parents before they get old enough and disrespect someone else and get their first ass whooping.

I agree with you there. Discipline doesn't mean you have to physically hit someone.

Discipline is necessary, though not physical. There are other ways to discipline a child than hitting/smacking them. I think parents these days don't bother to discipline their children, and as a result, you get disrespectful and out of control kids.
