Have you guys gone through this. So irritating. I got some speeding tickets, so they made me retake the written exam at the DMV for my license 2-4 years ago. Now i have to retake it again. Dang it ! I didn't study last time, and passed it on my first try. But to make the appointment, and have to spend most of my day at the DMV is no fun. Have they made you guys retake the written exam again ? Sux .. I was just there a few weeks ago because of a smog issue, not to return, arg !!

i do speed. just never got caught before.

well once, but it was in another city. pretty stupid. the police car was in front of me but i didn't realize it was a police car because it was nighttime and his car was black and he was going down the street like a frigging turtle. So i decided to dust him, next thing i know, i saw lights flashing in my rear view mirror. got pulled over for speeding and going the wrong way on a 1 way street. lol

Yeah DMV sucks. At least the written test are multiple choice and you could do them on their computers right?

Not in my town. You get a pencil and a table benched on the wall. They only let you miss 7 questions i believe.

I always leave early enough so that I don't have to speed. Common sense really but some people just aren't very smart despite the constant reminders of the speed limit signs along every road and a giant dial telling them their current speed right in front of them. Probably the same type of people that ignore the dummy lights when they light up.

Ha! those guys at the DMV said I'd have to take the written. Moved to Florida and they're like Oprah.

You get a license!

How many speeding tickets do you have to get before that happens?

I don't think speeding is always about a lack of time. For me it's about appreciating the time I have.

If you always follow the speed limit - you're going to be wasting a lot of your time in your car that wouldn't have otherwise, especially if you're going a decent distance. That time adds up if you commute often. So in the end you get to be the guy who spent a significantly greater portion of his life sitting in a seat behind a steering wheel, just on the off-chance you don't get a relatively small fine. I'll just say I'm not very envious of that guy. The argument I usually hear from this guy is "you're only saving a few minutes of time by speeding", yet I always get a good laugh when speeding often saves me at least 25% of the time it would have taken to commute otherwise.

So yea, I speed because I value my time. Driving 5-10 over the speed limit on an empty highway at night doesn't endanger anyone and it's incredibly easy to get away with. It's interesting driving by the people who only go 55-60. They must either really like sitting in a car or are really afraid of the cops. Can't say I share that fear, because it's possible to be smart about speeding and it's pretty easy to do.

Is the written test the computer one? I took it for my temporary license permit and it was pretty easy. The first question was "what do you do at this sign?" It was a picture of a stop sign lol.

@KHAndAnime: How fast are you going if you save 25% of the time it otherwise would have taken?

Driving 5-10 over to go past grandpas and soccer moms can save a dent or two on my car that's for sure or just the bad slow ones.

Heres a tip for everyone. Certain dmv services could be made at aaa places, save allllot of time and headaches.

The only way marginal speeding (5-10 mph over the limit) makes any real difference is over long trips. For a 20 mile trip (the average daily commute) going 55mph would take roughly 21 minutes, and going 65 would be roughly 18 minutes. 3 minute difference, utterly inconsequential. If you're saving "at least" 25% on travel time you are either going much faster than 5-10mph over the limit, or breaking other traffic laws (not coming to a stop, running lights, etc).

You definitely must live in a small town. In a huge city, tickets especially parking tickets are almost monthly.

Learn the parking rules? I avoid driving in the city because finding a parkingspot is next to impossible.

I go 5 over the limit on highways not because I am "afraid of the cops", but because I don't think saving the minute is worth the possible money it would cost me for the ticket and the points on my license if the troopers are running radar.

Speeding isn't inherently dangerous, but it is the only thing they seem to care about (that is not drunk driving).

I havent had to retake the written test, yet.

My last test was when I was 18, and that was 18 years ago. Also, I've gotten three speeding tickets. Yeah, you're really unlucky.

In California DMVs are a nightmare, in Washington state I thought they were bad but they're a cake walk next to the CA DMVs. Anyhow, in California you can make an appointment over the phone which will save you a lot more time than needing to go into the DMV without one. You still have to wait in a line but it's a lot, lot shorter.

Well I went on Friday, and walked in with no appointment, and i passed it. I was in at 2:30 pm and walked out 2 hours later. Luckily i went at the end of the day. By the way how slowly the numbers were being called, i didnt think i was going to make it, but it seems allot of those numbers were empty. Meaning people had left, and no one showed up front for their numbers. I should have just went up to the counter because they dont' check your number. And by the way i passed ! Missed the 1st time, and then took it again and passed. My DMV did an update too, they have computers now, and a new setup. I still dont' want to be there. Thats why i normally go to the AAA insurance office for car registration needs. I pay for road side assistance, about $50 a year, and you can go into any AAA office and register your car, title exchanges, smog issues and such, but no test retakes there.

@JustPlainLucas dude, you are one lucky sob ! Dang, maybe since they remodeled my local DMV, they just calling out fools to participate in redoing shit ?

@byof_america - Lol .. Ga Dang !

@Legend002 - Seems that way.
