Atheist = someone who doesn't believe in deities
Atheist =/= someone who doesn't believe in supernatural
Can I get a '/thread'? No wait, here come 3 million more replies.but cant the supernatural be used in someway as proof of a deityAtheist = someone who doesn't believe in deities

Huh? Atheist = someone who doesn't believe in God Atheist =/= someone who doesn't believe in supernatural_en1gma_he might have been thinking that supernatural thoughts can originate from religion and then passed on. im thinking thats how supernatural came about. if anyone has other ideas im all ears.
Atheism and disbelief in the supernatural do not neccesarily go hand in hand.
But no, I don't believe in the supernatural.
Most sects of Buddhism are godless. Demons are mentioned in their scriptures, since the Buddha himself allegedly encountered some. Therefore, it's fair to say that most Buddhists are atheists who believe in supernatural stuff.
[QUOTE="_en1gma_"]but cant the supernatural be used in someway as proof of a deityNo. If ghosts were found to exist that wouldn't mean there would be a God. If aliens were found to emit xray beams out of their eyes while they all looked like naked likenesses of Bea Arthur in her prime that wouldn't be evidence for a God. The only evidence for a God would be if God showed himself and did Godly things infrotn of us.Atheist = someone who doesn't believe in deities

I think TC could have a point. Assuming that ghosts are people that have died, and atheism is generally the Dane Cook line of, "When you die, nothing happens." It's a valid question.blackngold29Except that Dane Cook has his definition wrong (and he isn't funny)

Most atheists I have seen doubt God's exsistence because:
1. They can't see him (they want proof).
2. The idea of God is not logical.
Both of these are true of any spirit. So to believe one may exsist but not the other seems kinda strange to me.
Except that Dane Cook has his definition wrong (and he isn't funny) So what happens to an atheist when they die? (and I won't argue over that, because it's an opinion and your's is wrong)[QUOTE="blackngold29"]I think TC could have a point. The existence of the soul. (Which is what is thought to be your ghosts) would not in any way mean that there is a deity. That's like saying pictures of John Laroquet in drag is evidence that Night Court was the greatest show that ever existed.[QUOTE="blackngold29"][QUOTE="_en1gma_"] Except that Dane Cook has his definition wrong (and he isn't funny)_en1gma_So what happens to an atheist when they die? [QUOTE="_en1gma_"]this is wrong. atheist= someone who doesnt believe in a power higher than man.this is wrong as well. atheist = not a theist = doesn't believe in a God. Why don't you go ask a dead person? (I don't know and neither does anyone else living) But that doesn't show me where the definition is wrong. Or do atheist believe in an after-life, just not God? I already told you the definition...but I will restate it. Atheist: one who does not believe in any form of deities... Some atheists may believe in an afterlife, some don't. (mostly the latter I would assume)[QUOTE="_en1gma_"][QUOTE="blackngold29"] So what happens to an atheist when they die? Why don't you go ask a dead person? (I don't know and neither does anyone else living) But that doesn't show me where the definition is wrong. Or do atheist believe in an after-life, just not God? The definition is wrong because it doesn't address what the term atheist means. Atheism is not a shared set of beliefs, it just means the lack of belief in deities, so some atheists might believe that "nothing happens" (as in, no afterlife) but others could very well believe in something such as an afterlife.[QUOTE="_en1gma_"][QUOTE="blackngold29"] So what happens to an atheist when they die? this is wrong. atheist= someone who doesnt believe in a power higher than man. You are wrong. Atheism is a lack of theism. Theism is: the doctrine or belief in the existence of a God or godsI can honestly say I've never heard of an atheist who believes in an afterlife. Another part of the Cook joke, but that's another story... It must not involve any type of Heaven/Hell concept though right?

Buddhists believe in a hell. It's temporary, and it comes before reincarnation.
Depends on the person I suppose. Do they believe there's a logical/scientific explanation for everything? If that's the case then I don't see why they would believe in the supernatural.killab2oo5Those people don't understand logic/science. There is not a scientific explanation for EVERY occurrence in the universe, and every law is not solidified.

Were still very new to everything and were still trying to find out things about physics and the laws of nature.

] Nope, although pretty rare, someone could very well be an atheist and still believe in heaven/hell like concepts. Atheism is simply concerning the belief in deities, nothing else.I can honestly say I've never heard of an atheist who believes in an afterlife. no, supernatural happeningsare proof of something beyond our knowledge.
It is the person that puts the whole deity/god/supernatural spin on it.

so atheist dont believe in the power of nature, the ability to generate lightning for example due to physics, weather, and whatnot? That is certainly more powerful than man.
What about gravity? That pretty much effects everything. Definately more powerful than man.
Hell, even bears are more powerful than man on a pound for pound basis.
Atheism is strictly the disbelief in God...a higher sentient power. That is it.
We can believe in souls, we can believe in ghosts, we can believe gnomes, fairies, and trolls that guard bridges and take our bus money.
We just dont believe in god.
Of course, I think most atheists wouldnt believe in those things because rationality and atheism tend to go hand in hand, but still...you get my point.

Some might. I don't.
And yeah, I believe that everyone who believes in supernatural phenomena is lying, mistaken, gullible, mentally ill, or just imagining things.

Out of curiosity, do you believe in aliens?Anyways....seeing cabinets and drawers flying open, instantly freezing air, and hearing faint voices in a house that I would frequently clean/fix up, in broad daylight, while sober, and completely sane is....well you know.
I experienced that once...and the people that live in the house claim to feel weird and experience freezing spots...of course I don't tell them what I experienced.
I am no fool.
I never said you were a fool. I am merely saying that I think you were probably having some form of hallucination.
And I believe that there is probably a good chance that aliens exist. I don't really want to get any more specific than that, because there's no evidence that they actually exist. They may exist, they may not.
