I always hear about new initiatives to change schools, and allow children to explore in the school, get a better sense of their tactile functions, and allowing children to learn by themselves. But none of these strategies seem to work. I had to develop my own theory for teaching for my Ed classes, and I was able to see what I liked and didn't like going through my secondary education and into my college career. Hopefully I and my fellow education majors from the present into the future can make some good changes based on what we have seen, and really create a better learning enviornment than what we were exposed to. Most of us have had one or two really bad learning experiences that we can learn from.

Eh, quite a few of my teachers encourage creativity.

Though, standardized testing certainly doesn't help.

I'm probably the only person that watched that whole thing...He makes some interesting points, and i do agree that creativity is pushed aside for other things, but at the same time, I think that helps kids grow their talents on their own.

They don't kill it they simply don't help it grow. If you want to do be creative, do it on your own time because helping people be creative is not a schools job.

Kids don't have scheduling mastered yet.  The point is, schools should hold creative arts on the same level as everything else.  There needs to be equality within the education system.  So that all walks of life are given a chance.  Not only that but what exactly is the schools job?  Who employs the school?

I watched the entire video.  I agree with the speaker... school tries to mold everyone so similarly and give them the few skills that they feel are the most beneficial to the economy while pushing other, less practical, skills completely to the side.  I'm in favor of Montessori schools.

It is possible, at the same time I don’t believe we can expect schools to raise our children and provide them everything they need to succeed in life. There are things better learned outside the classroom that parents must provide, otherwise whatever the school does is moot.

I saw it, that was Very interesting... I wonder if his wife was in the audience>_> Anyway, I understood the points he was trying to make, I had like 4 times more math than music in ground school. I DID end up in College, studying Engineering Physics and I'm pretty satisfied with where I am... but there where at least 20 other students in my class who probably would have benefited from a different kind of subject-priority. It almost sounds like a question about what's more important, technological advancement or helping more people fulfill their dreams and contribute to society.

In my mediaproduction classes the teachers ussually let us do what we want as long as we make something. I hated my old art teacher. She never let me do what I wanted so I ended up failing.

~-~Oh my gosh that was a good video. I love that saying, "creativity can only come if we're not afraid to be wrong." Or I forgot how he worded it but he's right. School makes it so being wrong about something is pur evil. I'm dyslexic, I can read some how but I have the spelling of a 2nd grader. (or last I checked, I think I've made it to 3rd grade spelling by now) But if I was in public school they would have shoved the fact that I can't spell down my throat so hard I would of laugh at anyone who suggested me being a writer. I would of also felt like a failure and probably wouldn't get any where in life. But I disagree with upping all classes to the level they teach math and stuff. I think they should make school last less time then it does now. Doing it now would just unload all hell but if you want to find what a kid is good at give them free time. Make sure you're not just letting them sit in front of the TV though that'd back fire. But as you can tell from this post I can spell just fine. Sure I used spell check 4 times, but I wouldn't even think of typing it if I though I would just make a fool out of myself. You want to know how I learned to spell? I'll give you a hint it start's with a "Off" and ends in a "Topic." Having the free time to just type about everything and anything is the best way to learn how to spell. Sorry for the large post but I get picky when school is brought up.~-~

The goverment doesn't want to create individuals. They want YOU to think like everyone else and act like everyone else. Like Global Warming. The media and some scientist say it, so it must be true  They want YOU to be a sheep. But people like me, that are aware of this, can go to school with a critic mind.

While I do agree with him on some aspects, how Languages and Mathematics are placed in the top teir of learning, I don't think it has to do with educators (that's the sense I got from it) as a whole. If I go to King's College I will probably be in the Teacher Certification program, so if I do decide to pursue and educational career, I will have to think about these things. It really should be left up to the child to determine what course of action they should take.

liberalism kills creativity.

Be creative, as long as it doesn't OFFEND anyone.

Be creative, but be sure to filter your ideas to be impartial towards all people.

Speak freely, but only if it is our speech.

Schools in general suck about High School, I'm taking too many classes I won't use, a person who wants to be an auto machanic doesn't need to take biology, too much time is wasted in knowledge that won't be used.

And I believe that's trying to take advantage of us. We're not peons, we can think for ourselves, sometimes the best thing to do is go against authority.

when i first started film school, i was a bit disappointed because, for the most part, the program required that the films we made had a traditional narrative structure. i wanted to do things that were more experimental or were not plot-driven, but my professors looked down on that.

later, i realized that the projects that i wanted to do, would have probably sucked. i think that being creative and experimenting in a way that is valuable, means rebelling against authority and in order to do that, you need to know what the rules of the authority are and how people have deviated from them in the past. teachers have been telling me this since grade school, but only recently have i realized that it isn't bull****.
