when i was thinking about it, alot of the videos and stuff you see of tornados come from the united states, usually around rural cities and such in the "tornado alley", and i never hear much about tornados in europe and africa and stuff

are tornados common where you are from? (if your outside the us that is)

As well-versed on the climatology of tornadoes as the average Off Topic poster is, I think this question might have been better suited to Google.

They do happen outside the US, but the great plains provide the perfect setting for tornadoes to spawn.

They do happen outside of America, but it's rare. IIRC, something like 90%+ of tornadoes reported each year occur in the US, most of which, in turn, are reported in tornado alley.

Very rarely have them in New Zealand. Though there was one a few weeks ago in a major city, killed 1 person.

Sometimes but the US gets the worst ones and the most. One of the many, many reasons I have no desire to ever be in central US.

Tornados can happen anywhere on Earth, however the specific geographic and atmospheric condition in Americe between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountain ranges make conditions extremely favorable for tornados to form. Thus by far most tornados on the planet spawn in the central US.

I think the south pacific gets its fair share of cyclones (iirc those are tornadoes over water, right?) but as far as tornadoes the majority occur in the US.

Maybe Russia gets some? I know they have a lot of flat land out there

This isn't really a fair criticism.. Tornadoes are a rare weather pattern.. And all footage I have ever seen of tornadoes are within the United States..

Nah, a cyclone is just a plain old tornado by another name. A tornado over water is referred to as a waterspout.

We've had too many tornados this year in Tornado Alley. Had a couple last night and another couple today. Not too much fun. But, I'm going to get my master's in meteorology because I love tornadoes.

According to Wiki its a tropical storm before it becomes a Typhoon or Hurricane.. I honestly thought it was just another name for a hurricane.

i thought Cyclones was what Hurricanes are called in the southern hemisphere

Hurricanes = Anti-clockwise and in the northern hemisphere

Cyclones = Clockwise in the southern hemisphere

Yes, meteorologists use the term "cyclone" to refer specifically to tropical storms, but in common usage it is also used as another name for tornados.

I am sorry, but how is this an example of that? It was an honest question. I pay attention to what is going on in the world, or at least try to, and I have never heard of a tornado (or, more specifically, a part of the world know for tornadoes) outside of the US.

Its not a stupid question, and its not an example of ignorance.

I swear, you people will take anything and turn it around against the US, even if there is no cause to.

Tornadoes can happen anywhere and a tornado over water is called a waterspout. I have pictures of one that happened off the west coast of Okinawa back in the early 80's. As been said, cyclones typically refer to hurricanes or typhoons though they can relate to a tornado. Just recently I saw a dust devil (a type of weak tornado) just outside of Edmonton Canada on my way up to Fort Saskatchewan for a job.

This pic shows where tornadoes happen and if you notice, it is mostly in temperate regions.

HeHateMe_basic

We had them last night here in West Tn. I was on my way home and a tree fell right by me as I was driving...OH..not just one tree but 2...I pulled over actualy right beside them and I didnt even know it. I couldnt see AT ALL!!!The wind was about 60mph at least. Thought I was in a tornado and was pretty freaking scared..I posted pics and a video on my Facebook account..
