We live in a world where owning something is considered the end all be all of existance. Why?

When all is said and done, guess what? We die. We rot in a coffin or in an urn or just lay on the ground and go away from our self conscious physical selves.

Regardless of how you feel about reincarnation or anything else along the same lines, why do we go out of our way to make ourselves suffer to gain something that we won't own forever?

The reason I do it is so I can support a future where I can have some type of luxury like food and shelter, and I suppose support a family. But now that I think about this, why would I want to make another human being/beings suffer on this hellish landscape?

To want is to suffer, and as that is a fact, why do we feel like we just need more and more and more when in the end, it's all for nothing?

Because I get to use the stuff I and others perceive as mine. As long as everyone agrees something is mine, I own it, and get to determine what is done with it.

That illusion of possession is enough for me.

I'm not sure who originally said it, but when referring to firearms there is a saying, "you never really own a firearm, you are just the caretaker"

Interesting opinions on the matter. Materialism and existentialism are 2 important topics that I like to discuss with people. Any more comments on this are more than welcome.

I've thought about that before. We work hard but in the end we lose everything. It's kind of depressing.

Yeah, but you get all the experiences in between the start and end.

Those, at the very least, will always be yours.

That's why I try not to get too attached to any possessions...It's not so bad to "lose" everything in the end if you were never too invested in anything in the first place....

It all depends on what you want in life. I just watched "Into the Wild" a few nights ago; not a bad movie but also a bit idealized as well. That type of lifestyle could really suck.

Meh, just depends on what you want.

Well, you need to do something in life that makes you happy. If you only work and don't do anything that makes you happy, you will be miserable and that will effect your work in a negative way. If you can somehow do your work and find happiness in your work without any luxuries, then that's good for you. But some people need the luxuries to feel happy.

If you're working towards a material end then its all in vain. The meaning of life can be tied in to the pursuit of material objects, in the sense that its the complete wrong direction. Why do you think millionaires still suffer from depression? Working towards an inner goal of self happiness and peace of mind through activities and knowledge should be everyone's goal. Not obtaining the largest SUV on the block with the most gold chains around your neck.

Going along with what was said a bit earlier, do we even own our own memories? Or are those something that can only be given to somebody else?

There is really no question as to if you actually own something; you simply do. I think your complaint is the emphasis we, as a society (not mankind), have put on material possessions.

I'm not saying that we don't acquire things, my argument is what the definition of "own" is. When all of us invariably move on, how does that define what we previously had? Did we really own anything in the first place or not?

I own something when it is in my possession and no one else holds a rightful claim to it. When I die I obviously no longer own it or anything else.

yes, we own things. then we die. what the hell do i care what happens to my things when i die? what the hell do i care about anything when i die? enjoy YOUR things while youre alive. the things you own give you satisfaction while you are alive. nothing gives you satisfaction or disatifaction when youre dead, so why bother worrying?

Then why in that case, do we even have the word own? Rent would make more sense, or use, or something, but in my opinion, I don't think that own should even exist. Permanence within a time restraint is impossible. It's an oxymoron if you think about it.

yeah, but that would apply to a lot of things if you have to constantly talk about things from the perspective of death. its seems kind of superfluous to constantly reference everything to a period we wont experience.

We don't talk about anything as it pertains to death unless we are discussing the topic itself. We just assume that what the context refers to is the immediate present or past.

Is it really fair to then call something ours when in reality, it never belongs to anybody?

We attach significance to something based on our own perceived and agreed upon notions of the word itself.

Just because you suffer or work towards something does not mean you particularly own it unless all of us agree upon that. In this case, I'll be the one to disagree. Now we have to look at the word own by itself and isolate it.

Here's an idea, does the word own have multiple definitions? It would obviously have to if it was to be in use by everyone. Not everybody agrees on the word, we just assume that everyone will follow along with the idea.

we do own things in context of our society. if you steal something and the government finds out, you get trouble. why? because its not yours. its owned by somebody else. this applies almost all societies. and any society that doesnt follow that basic rule likely doesnt use the word "own." anything beyond that is arguing semantics and getting to useless limitations of our own language.

and one person's disagreement cant change the meaning of the word. i could start calling a dog a frog, but it would only alter my own usage. if i then went and asked for a dog, i wouldnt get slimy little green thing. id get a big furry animal that eats its ****.

the point however that he is trying to bring accross is if it wont be yours "forever" do you really own it? and i agree with him because it wont be yours forever and in that sence you cant technically say you "own" anything except your thoughts, your mind, and memmories, and in saying such, my house that I "own" and live in, i will not have forever so who am i to say its "mine"? ill tell you who, im the current owner of it, the word "own" doesnt mean forever and everything in my possesion, (although i might not have forever) i still do "own" for reasons of : " I claimed it, its mine."

Eh, just because you don't remember them doesn't mean they didn't happen... right?

Now, after your death is a different question. If we have a soul, does it "remember" what it was that the body that housed it experienced?

Yeah, that shows ownership.

Then your grave gets robbed like the Egyptians, or, well, you burn stuff that could be used by others. So, it's either vandalism and selfishness, or just selfishness.

Someone stealing it doesn't mean you didn't absolutely own it, and burning it isn't really vandalism.
