The reason I'm asking is that I own a fairly big DVD collection andrecently I've had a few of my friends come over to watch a movie. They have ended up beening dissapointed that a large portion of my collection is dedicated to movies of the 60-80s era. I tried to get a few to watch 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', they refused claiming it was dated and boring. Another time I tried to encourage them to watch 'Alien' when they wanted to watch a good thriller/horror. Again they claimed it was old/dated and wasn't scary enough and ended up going out to rent Saw. Tried to get them to watch'The Great Escape' again - no dice. Don't even get me started on their reaction to'Blazing Saddles', 'Splash' and 'E.T'.

It seems these older gems arebeing overlooked these days byyounger people looking for the new CGI and big bangs. I'm sure if they actually watched these movies they could appreciate them but for some reason they react as if allergic to anything that was made before they were born as if they know they wouldn't like it. It's frustrating.

So do you appreciate movies regardless of age? Or do you tend to veer away from anything that you classify as 'old'?

As long as they are good, yes. A lot of older movies haven't aged very well, though (imo at least). Some are still great, though.

It's sad because those movies aren't even THAT old! It really is a shame that people these days are overlooking all the movies that their current day favorites draw ALL of their influences from!

And by the way, you have great taste: Alien is easily my favorite horror movie of all time! :D

I think a ton of people would like Seven Samurai, but very few people would ever watch a black and white movie with Japanese dialogue.

About 1/2 my collection (other than TV shows) is before 1990. I even watch films from the 20s-30s from time to time. One of my favorite movies of all time is Dr. Strangelove... But yeah, I have friends that don't 'get it' too.

I love old movies, in fact I often find them much more involving, I suppose because they needed good scripts back in the day instead of just CGI effects everywhere. Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rebecca' based on the Daphne Du Maurier book is my favourite film (well, top 3 at least).

It depends. There are "great" films that were more so a great film at its time. The Graduate, the film is really not that great. Iconic maybe, but it didn't stand the test of time really. There are however true classics that I can enjoy.

Apparently it's "not cool" to enjoy a movie that is more than 10 years old for most kids these days... Gladly, I'm not one of those people and don't give a **** what people would think of me because I can and do enjoy films in black and white. They're just naive and missing out.

Yes, that attitude really annoys me. I hate when people say older movies can't be good.

As for black and white films, well, 12 Angry Men is one of my top five all-time movies :P. Dr. Strangelove and Casablanca (especially Dr. Strangelove) are also huge favorites. Same with To Kill A Mockingbird.

I really enjoy older movies, many are better than what you see today. Some of my favorites are..

Casablanca is a classic

Lawrence of Arabia is great

The Dictator, with Charlie Chaplin, is hilarious.

I suppose you could say I do as I mainly watch films from the '30s. I really don't care all that much when a movie was made as if I haven't seen it yet then it's a new movie to me no matter what its age.

'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' - yea it's pretty boring.

'Alien' - WTF did they even watch this or just ignore you cause you tried to make the watch Close Encounters?

'The Great Escape'- it's been awhile since I've seen this, but I don't think it's as good as modern escape films

'Blazing Saddles' - WTF did they even watch this? This is shocking humor even for today.

'Splash' - Haven't seen since I was a little kid, and didn't like it much.

'E.T'. - Mostly nostalgia,

I don't really consider any of these really old besides the great escape, but one thing I know is that if people go into a film w/ preconceptions they are more likely to come out of the film w/ the same feelings.

My post wasn't to establish what you classify as an older film or what you think of the films I mentioned. Although I agree with your last point. Too many people are close minded these days when it comes to media of all forms.

No. If a movie didn't come out in the last 6 months it's too old for me to watch.

jk. I like old movies. I know The Terminator isn't that old (1984), but I still think it's funny to watch it and see ppl's crazy clothing and hairstyles. I've probably seen that movie like 6 times.

Blade Runner was friggin' awesome.

I saw the original The Day the Earth Stood Still. It was in black and white. Although the lack of any real special effects sorta sucked, it's still a movie that can be appreciated for the time period it was made in.

I have absolutely no problem with movies from the 60s-80s...a lot of my favorite movies come from the 70s (Jaws, Blazing Saddles, Star Wars just to name a few). But anything before the 60s and I start to have a problem...even something like Casablanca was hard for me to finish.

a good movie is a good movie, no matter the age. though a few great movies still have some bad leftovers from the time they were made. for instance, the casting in laurance of arabia is occasionally cringe worthy. theres a severe lacking of arabian (or atleast middle eastern) actors playing major middle eastern roles. instead, they just throw some makeup on obi wan konobi.

"Seven Samurai" is one of my favorite movies of all time. Its Black and White, has subtitles, and was made in the 60's. Great movies, are still Great movies no matter when they were made. I feel the same way, that the younger generation wont even get to see or appreciate the true classics because they wont give them the chance. In 20 years, all of the great movies that we've grown up with will either be forgotten, or replaced by crappy remakes with horrible acting and over the top CGI.

I love old movies. Half of my favorite movies are from the '30s-'60s (Vertigo, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It's a Wonderful Life, etc.). If a movie sounds good to me, then I'll watch it. I don't care about when it was made or if it's in black and white or not. I'm not picky or closed-minded.

12 Angry Men is #4 on my mental list of favorite movies. That sounds like a 'yes' to me. There are dated movies, and there are timeless movies. The dated ones get worse over time. If you want your friends to appreciate older movies, try showing them good movies, instead of movies like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Alien".

Yes i do enjoy old and classic movies. One of my favorites is Casablanca, which has my favorite movie scene where the Nazi's singing "Die Wacht Am Rhine" were drowned out by everyone singing "La Marseilles".

I will add that it annoys me when people are so stiffly predisposed to movies made prior to set date.

Every single one of my friends has that attitude. If it's more than 5 years old, then it's old and stupid to them. Most of the movies and music I like wasn't made recently, and they mock me for it. It's kinda sad when they'd rather watch Saw or the new Halloween movie rather than Patton or The Great Escape.

That's odd. I watched The Bridge on the River Kwai the other night and I thought it hasn't aged at all. I loved every second of it.

As for Citizen Kane, it's a technical masterpiece. Almost every film that followed it were influenced from Citizen Kane.

A good film is a good film regardless of age, however some do not age so well. I've yet to delve deep (I've seen a few) into the really old black and white classics. It is pretty overwhelming.

Bridge On (Over?) the River Kwai is great. I watched it about a day after I watched Platoon, but I enjoyed it more. Platoon was depressing as hell, but Bridge was just cool all around. Same with the Great Escape.

The best "old" movies I think I enjoyed are Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns. Fistful of Dollars was amazing all through.

ive gotta agree with you there. it may be the most long winded "do the right thing" movie ever made, but thats part of the reason its aged so well. its the focus on these themes, the actors (alec guiness was great), and it capturing a charm just right for the ww2 era that make it always feel so right.

I do, I actually prefer the oldies to the new ones (for the most part). I watch TCM all the time. I would love to have a lot of the oldies in my collection but I lack money......Someday.

Although I enjoyed it, I don't think Citizen Kane aged well. I don't think Gone With The Wind aged well. I don't think The Bridge Over The River Kwai aged well (I enjoyed it though). Just my opinions, though, don't really feel like going into it.

That's odd. I watched The Bridge on the River Kwai the other night and I thought it hasn't aged at all. I loved every second of it.

ive gotta agree with you there. it may be the most long winded "do the right thing" movie ever made, but thats part of the reason its aged so well. its the focus on these themes, the actors (alec guiness was great), and it capturing a charm just right for the ww2 era that make it always feel so right.

The ending is one of my favorites. The whole last 30 minutes is so intense. I agree with you, Alec Guiness was fantastic. I think it's his best role.
