Often times in literature, proper and more northern accents symbolize an educated person, whereas southern more "redneck" accents stand for ignorance. For Ex. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus talks with proper English and grammar, and is educated ad intellectual. However, in the book, many of the people, such as Mr. Ewell or Mrs. Dubose who talk with southern accents are ignorant and racist.

I myself have caught myself judging those with heavy southern "redneck" accents without realizing it. I don't think I should, however...

Theres a difference between whether or not a person uses proper grammer, and whether he talks with an accent.  The two aren't mutually exclusive.  If a person has an accent, but uses proper grammer, then I'd make no judgement at all.  But anyone, accent or not, who uses poor grammer, appears to be an uneducated person to me.

not really I judge people on what they say, not how they say it.

I see it as grammar and spelling on forums, as long as you can be clearly understood it doesn't really matter.

Yes, I do.

Funny thing is, I live in Florida. But I don't have that accent, and just hearing it makes me retch.

When I lived in the North, I did.  That changed when I moved to Georgia.  I hate the accent and I still use my Northern/Portuguese accent except for the occasionall "y'all", but besides minorities and rednecks, the people here aren't any stupider than people in the North no matter how bad their accent is (the valedictorian when I graduated had one of the most Southern accents I had ever heard).  But then again, I was born in Europe, so I've always felt that most Americans everywhere aren't very smart.

edit: As for what you said about Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird:  There are Southern people who choose to have a Northern accent because they're afraid that people from elsewhere would think they're ignorant.  I had a teacher my senior year that had a Northern accent and was from a very redneck area.  Imo, you've got to be VERY smart to be able to ignore how everyone around you talks, and force yourself to speak with a different accent.edit again: I also forgot to mention that there are things that Southern people say correctly and northern people say incorrectly.  i.e. In the North, School is pronounced with 2 syllables (skoo-ul) when it should be pronounced with 1.  I was surprised when I was told about this.

To your topic, no, people who think that Southern accents are ignorant are the ignorant ones. I myself are Texan too, but I don't really here accents around here because there are mostly Mexicans and white people around here don't have an accent.

Well, subconsiously I actually do, AI always expect a little arrogantism, although I don't blame it on the person but the culture. just think about it, you grow up in a farm, knowing maybe 10 different folks.. You won't really give a crap about Iraq, so you don't mind expressing overexaggerated opinion either.

I'm from the South (born in Alabama and grew up on a cattle farm) and i can say i talk with a very Southern accent....Southern people use a completley different set of words than yankees (aka northerners lol)

If you ever visit the South you can expect to hear the following...

-Y'all, We say this word like there is no tomorrow...it comes up in alot of sentances and is a way of saying "You All", it is used to address more than one person, Or if your talking to someone from a different family it can be used to inquire about that persons family.  ie.  "Hey Bill! long time no see! how have yall been?"

- Over Yonder, also pronounced as "Over Yunder" or "Ova-Yawn Duh" Very complex in it's meaning...it's used as a 5th direction (in addition to North, South, East and West) it can refer to something across a short distance ie.  "haha look over yunder at that yellow car...that's a ugly lookin car ain'it?" or something across town ie.  "that new restraunt is over yunder by pete's gas station"

-Fixin' To, If you have never been to th South you prolly have no idea what that means....it means you are about to do something or go somewhere.  ie.  "I'm fixin to head over to Sally's"

-Coke, ANY kind of soft drink...when you go to a restraunt and the waitress asks what you want to drink if you say "Coke" they will either bring you a Coke or a Pepsi or some drink similar to a Coke.

-Cattywampus, something that ain't sitting straight...it's crooked.  ie.  "that picture over yunder on that wall is a might cattywampus...i best straightin it"

-Fetch, to retrive something, ie. "Johnny, fetch me that there hammer."

anyway the list goes on...but in short, Southern people ain't stupid and they all aren't racist, there is just as much (if not more) racism up north.

Well let's think about it by using the transative property.

Who votes for Bush? People with Southern accents.

What are people who vote for Bush? Stupid.

That would be funny if it weren't for the fact that there are way more people in the West and North than there are in the South.  More people voted for him than Kerry.  You figure out the rest.

Being a Northerner, southern speech has a lazy sound to it. It could have developed over time in the stifling humid heat down there. Obviously, southerners are just as smart as anyone, regardless of perception.

I used to think everyone with a southern accent was just a redneck hillbilly living in a trailer.  Now I know better.  That is not ALWAYS the case.  Sometimes it is...just like any accent you come across.

If I heard someone say something in a southern accent then these are the things that go through my mind.

They are from the south (obviously)

Rascist

Arrogant

Ignorant

Blindly believe that god is the answer to everything.

Lives in a trailer.

I cannot help these thoughts going through my mind. Does that make me a bad person?

also, I am from the south and have a southern accent, and I find it annoying when people judge you on how you speak.  I also agree that they are "rednecks" , though, but not everyone from the south is one.

I am not trying to judge you because obviously I do not know you, but It just seems that this is how everyone pictures the south.

  1. That is the only one you got right because it is an obvious fact.
  2. I have many friends of all races.  I do not judge one race better than another.
  3. There are aroggant people everywhere in the world, not just here.
  4. Again, there are Ignorant people everywhere.  not everyone is .
  5. Everyone can believe whatever they want.  I am a christian, but I know many people who are not.
  6. They may be more common in the south, but a majority of people do not live in one.

I am not trying to call you a bad person, I am just sick of everyone stereotyping the south.

America is one of the most educated countries in the world. Most areas in the nation are well educated. The accent (even with bad grammer) doesn't show how educated they are. It is just the way they talk (handed down from generations). If your parents and grandparents talked the same way, you would too. You always would no matter how educated you were. I definitly don't associate the south with racism anymore than I do with the north. During the civil war the only difference between the North and South is that the South's economy relied on slavery at that point. If the North's economy had relied on it that much they would't have wanted to give it up either.

no i don't. i didn't before my recent linguistics class. and i think now it's further ingrained in me that people aren't unintelligent just because they have different dialects. as long as i can understand what you're saying, we're cool

No....accents aren't the deciding factor.  Proper grammar is...though to be honest, I don't like southern accents...but I don't associate it with a lack of education.

[QUOTE="Chief_Smackaho"]

"Johnny, fetch me that there hammer."

anyway the list goes on...but in short, Southern people ain't stupid and they all aren't racist, there is just as much (if not more) racism up north.

........... "if not more" ruined your post quality.
