I wonder if MythBusters ever did a episode on chicken soup. My partner in crime at work just called off sick for a few days, and one of our co-workers said, make sure you get some chicken soup. My mom says the same thing, and lots of people i know too. Why ? Does it really have magic healing powers ? I don't think there is any proof, is there ? Could the chicken be some aliens species ? Lol .. Do you believe this myth ? Do you have your chicken soup when sick ? I know i do, although i have no idea why.

I thought that people ate chicken soup when they're sick because it's a light meal that's easy to keep down and won't upset one's stomach. I've been so sick before that I couldn't eat most foods without vomiting it back up. But chicken soup (not the extra chunky stuff) was one of the few things I could actually eat without vomiting.

Science Says…

Researchers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha found evidence of chicken soup’s anti-inflammatory properties. Dr. Stephen Rennard analyzed the ability of white blood cells to migrate across a filter from one side of a chamber to the other. Then, he added chicken soup to the mix. Turns out, fewer white blood cells migrated across the filter when in the presence of chicken soup. Although the exact biological mechanism is undetermined, it seems the chemical makeup of chicken soup either suppresses or slows the accumulation of white blood cells in the lung area, thereby relieving cold symptoms. Although scientists don’t know if it’s a particular ingredient or a more holistic component that makes chicken soup such an effective cold cure, there’s no denying it’s more than just comfort food.

Don’t have access to your grandma’s homemade chicken soup? Not to worry; the study tested 13 store-bought brands of canned soup that worked just as effectively.

ok. then there isn't really need for "belief" if there is scientific evidence to support it's beneficial properties is there?

Well this is what i believe. The chicken goes around eating all the shit in the ground. Plants, ants, soil, rain water, ect. Those are all earth's natural ingredients. I believe that because the chicken is constantly eating this stuff, and we eat the chicken, that it makes able to fight off most of the crap. Basically its like were eating all that crap right ? So some of the stuff that gets us sick, we fight off. Crap, i don't know.

I also believe in this myth that Chicken Soup has healing abilities cause when I was a kid, I got really sick from a fever and my mom cook me some Chicken Noodle Soup and the next day, I was getting somewhat better. But hey, anything's possible if the myth is true or not.

Well someone already posted a scientific study, but outside of that I would also add that as Mr. Geezer mentioned it is extremely easy to keep down when you have an upset stomach, it is GREAT for hydration as it has salt and other nutrients beyond simple water to fuel your body, the warmth and saltiness of the soup will help sooth your throat and on TOP of that it could possibly help clear your sinuses a little.

Really just a great thing to have when you are sick. If you are having serious sinus issue though I would say having green tea with honey is even better for you. It can actually help fight/ward off sinus infections thanks to honey being a very good natural anti-biotic and it too does a great job to sooth ones throat and help your sinuses out a bit.

It probably does not do anything in itself, but the placebo effect can be quite powerful.

I tend to drink plenty of orange juice cause Vitamin C helps against the common cold.

Never had chicken soup when I'm ill.

It;s pretty simple. Salt, water hydration, carbohydrates from the noodles, and protein from the meat. Easy on the stomach, and easily converted within the digestive system.
