Here is an argument I had. Its about people that were here before the takeover by first spanish and then the US. Or all the territories gained by the Treaty of Guadalupe. The majority of the population in those territories were Mexican, Catholic and Spanish speaking. However they had to learn english and it became mandatory after the war. Also their land got taken away since the spanish papers they had to prove that the land was theirs were not considered valid since they were spanish papers(as in Spain). As a result the movement known as the Raza originated to preserve their land and language. Raza does mean race but it does not have a racist meaning, its more about culture. The people were forced to assimilate into an American way of life even when their way of life was better for them. Now today there is an argument that immigrants need to assimilate to the US culture and way of life. But freedom of expression lets us express ourselves as we see fit. So what is wrong with keeping your culture and traditions even language when living in the US?

The North and South spoke the same language. Ideological differences cause far larger problems than language barriers.

I don't think that people should have to get rid of their own culture in order to get by in the US, but I also think that those same people can't expect everyone else to change to accommodate them.

I believe the U.S. should have a common language. And eventually the entire world should speak the same language. It would make things MUCH easier, and smoother, and definitely cheaper.

I agree with you. You can keep your culture and language at your own costs. And people that live here do. Don't expect everyone to understand but I don't think people should be so critical too.

You assume that neither side would have translators. But it wasn't hard to negotiate with Mexico to take half their land.

If your culture was so great that you want to keep it, why not stay someplace where your culture is dominant?

After all, your culture is better than the Americans, it should be a better place than America, right?

If you want to speak your language, why not stay someplace where everyone speaks your language?

Then you'll have no language barrier nor will you face discrimination for not speaking english.

Let me ask you something. Why does seeing other cultures make you mad? Or why is it in any way a bad thing? You might also have meant the US cause America speaks mostly Spanish. And are you justifying discrimination. Many people that live here had no choice. Natives for instance. You did not assimilate to their culture and language now why preach others to assimilate to yours? Very hipocritical.

Yeah and then we should all start eating only french fries, hamburgers and hotdogs. Mass production of one purpose meat would be a lot cheaper than the food diversity we have now. As a side note: would you want to learn chinese? Because as you know this is the most used language on this planet. Would you still feal 100% american if you had to speak only chinese?

I though spanish was the most spoken language but I'm shocked that its chinese or mandarin something like that. But it kinda makes sense since china has so many people. Its amazing though to know that the population of china is more than that of most of America.

People are all individuals. Let the country influence you when you like it and when it helps you, but there isn't a uniform "American lifestyle" that everyone should abide by. This country offers opportunity to immigrants, and immigrants from around the world bring all bring something to the table.

While it would speed up communication, I agree it would be a shame. I don't really know if it's practical to expect one group to switch to another language.
