Here is an argument I had. Its about people that were here before the takeover by first spanish and then the US. Or all the territories gained by the Treaty of Guadalupe. The majority of the population in those territories were Mexican, Catholic and Spanish speaking. However they had to learn english and it became mandatory after the war. Also their land got taken away since the spanish papers they had to prove that the land was theirs were not considered valid since they were spanish papers(as in Spain). As a result the movement known as the Raza originated to preserve their land and language. Raza does mean race but it does not have a racist meaning, its more about culture. The people were forced to assimilate into an American way of life even when their way of life was better for them. Now today there is an argument that immigrants need to assimilate to the US culture and way of life. But freedom of expression lets us express ourselves as we see fit. So what is wrong with keeping your culture and traditions even language when living in the US?
