In my opinion, I do believe that police officers use biased experiences from their past as well as stereotypes to help indicate who they should arrest.

Also, I believe that socio-economic status do play a key factor for police officers to question certain groups of individuals, usually lower-working class individuals and people of ethnic-backgrounds.

Let me know what you guys think about this topic.

Thanks

This is true, but there are differences between negative and positive stereotypes, where as, the police use negative stereotypes majority of the time.

I think they do. But its not limited to the cops, I get stereotyped all the time because of my appearance. But cops should really excercise caution in that department, i mean, all individuals with any sort of power should NEVER let stereotypes affect their judgment, and if so, they should be fired.

This is sort of ironic, considering you are stereotyping the cops...

But honestly, some cops do stereotype and are more likely to arrest/pull over people based on race, and some don't.

It's the same with all groups of people, you just notice it with the cops because they have power.

Police do stereotype for obvious reasons.

A 20 year old black guy wearing a hooded top is more likely to have a weapon/drugs than, say, a middle-aged white male in a suit. Stereotypes can often have sound roots.

If 75% of crimes are committed by blonde teenaged girls in your town, wouldn't you want police to give a little extra scrutiny to blonde teenaged girls?

Yes I am sure.

I have seen videos leaked in the news of cops doing some weird thing to immigrants while they were holding them in the police station.

I also have some sort of experience because a very close relative of mine was a cop and also a few weeks ago there was a march of some members of some army unit in Greece (the airforce/the marines (idk)) that were shouting motos against Albanians, all video-ed and shown on TV.

If I find links I'll be back...

Oh here they are:

http://www.worldbulletin.net/news_detail.php?id=56122

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw9SN9EttaQ

The video was shown on TV. The officer is basically having one immigrant hitting the other while he is commanding (in Greek): "harder"

And later on in the video the officer is also telling them to say "Ειμαι μαλακας" (I am an @hole) before hitting each other.

I'm always surprised by the fact that people tell blacks to get over racism, yet a lot of time those very same people support it when the police apply racial stereotypes, leading to frustration among blacks about racism. And the cycle continues...

My cop buddy says he racially profiles all of the time. He works in the ghetto though, so his is "reversed". White guy in the ghetto=buying crack.

i do believe cops use racial profiling and i support it. Black guy dressed like lil wayne with his pants around his knees is gonna be looked at by police more carefully, white kid in the middle of the ghetto is probly buying drugs. If your not doing anything wrong the the police stopping you is only and inconvenience and you'll get over it. If you dont like it then you should dress/act more appropriately. If you dont like me because of what i have to say, I'll get over it.

interesting topic. I think they do and to some degree I think its warranted. However, to a larger degree its not warranted when considering ALL crime rather than just street crime. Granted police are responsible for the streets but consider that Tom Delay was investigated using the district attorneys office for the county the capital in Austin. The laws used where related to conspiracy usually used for organized crime however what he was doing actually was organized crime.

The more intresting questioncould be this. Should we investigate corportate and poltical crime with the same amount of focus and effort we do for street crime.

man in the suit might not be carrying a gun but that nice jacket still could be a sign that he is responsible for killing people.

But oftentimes corporate and political crime doesn't kill people as much as street crime does.

its a fact that black men attract police offers like little girls attract pedophileshittin
but the question is do little girls attract much pedos? Afterall I've seen statistics that say that 20-40% of pedophiles are gay

If you are a cop, then I don't understand why you sarcastically posted that when it is true. If you are sitting on the side of the street with a radar gun, you are trying to get someone. When you are driving a vehicle that doesn't identify you as an officer, you are trying to get someone...
