I used to back in the days before the internet was everywhere. I'd play a game and then play it through with help from the guide so I could get, kill, do everything. These days they are mostly collectors items as they have been made irrelevant by sites like gamefaqs.
I used to buy them for the majority of games I played when I was a kid. I didn't really need them, I just enjoyed reading about video games. They're actually how I learned to read as a kid. Now that I'm older, I don't buy them anymore unless it's a special deal with the game or something to that effect.
It's easier to look at a free online complete walkthrough, than to spend money on a strategy guide. Besides, I have a laptop, so the convenience is there too.
I bought the Pokemon guides for Ruby & Sapphire and Diamond & Pearl but it was mainly for the pretty pictures - I haven't actually used the latter one even though it cost me 11 quid - it just looks nice :P
