Today in class we were discussing India and Ghandi. Well we have a student who is Indian and his name is Noah. Our teacher promised us some free time to talk about what we did over spring break. I raised my hand and I said I had an Asian Party (It was really just a family reunion.) Everyone asked did you invite Noah. I said no , because he's not asian. Everyone said, yes he is, he's Indian. I said I understand he is technically asian but im referring to the south east asian and north asian. But then I thought , i never really counted Indians asian. I asked my parents if they consider Indians asian and they said no. I asked my grandpa and he said no. I asked some of my friends who are asian and they said no. I see where they get the point, when people think of asian, they think of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, Khmer, Mong.

But I want to ask OT, do you consider Indians Asians?

Option #4 came from a girl who didn't know that there were 2 Indians. Native Americans and Indians :P

If not, my Eastern Civilization class needs to get its facts fixed. But really, most people think of them as their own little country in their own little world so they will just call them Indians. They don't really look like Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, and so forth so I guess that's why. More like the sub part of Pakistan and such.

It is funny because I personally don't... but when I went to Asia all the East Asians said they considered them to be Asian.... yet I still consider them a "Sub-Race" and not really Asian.. more like an offshoot that is really their own race. Note: Sub does not in anyway mean negative just like sub-continent does not.

Yes, I think of them as Asians... because they are from Asia.

However, what you are talking about is Oriental people. No, Indians are not Oriental.

The Middle East is also part of Asia. So Middle Easterners are also "Asian".

I call myself Asian and im Pakistani though tbh all my friends do too. Now when we think of chinese people we consider them Asian too obviously because theyre from Asia but not our kind of Asian. Though when im filling out application forms and other documents in the ethnicity bit, where it says Asian it usually has pakistani, indian and bangledeshi under it and chinese has its own section.

I am Bengali too!!! I live in Canada, when you say Asian in Canada, people assume you are talking about Eastern Asian people, like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. In the UK, when I went there I said Asian and they assumed I was talking about South Asians, like Bangladeshi, Indian, or Pakistani

They are from Asia so yes, they are Asian. Not considering them to be Asian is quite frankly, wrong.

Although one thing is that in the US and Australia, when people say Asian those from East and Southeast Asia (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese etc.)

In the UK when people say Asian, they mean those from South Asia (Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan etc.)

When I use "asian" I'm always referring to East Asians instead of the entire continent of Asia. Pretty sure most of the US follows this as well.

Yes, definitely. Asia isn't limited to East and Southeast Asia. Indians are just as Asian as the Chinese or the Japanese.

Most people have a pale, Chinese or Japanese image/idea of 'Asians' in their head.

I think the "race" system is bent out of shape- it's half assed. Most of the "groups" on things like passports and stuff that have you select a race pertain to skin color, until you get to Pacific Islander and Asians, which then becomes regional. Theres obviously much more diversity in Asia.

Does it really matter though? No, it does not.

No seeing as Asians are identified as a racial group.. One in which the Indian population is not apart of.. They are two different groups racially.. Geographically.. Who the hell cares.. The Middle East is apart of Asia.. After all.. And we certainly don't call them Asians.

In a technical sense yes, people from India, most of the Middle East, Siberia, etc. could be classified as Asian, since those are all located in Asia.

As a racial classification, though, Asian typically refers to a more specific region of eastern Asia, so in common usage, I do not.

They are usually described as their own.. As being Indian.. Do you realize that the Middle East is also part of Asia? Do we call those people Asian? No they are their own racial subgroups.. Asian in the United States under racial catagorization.. It is direct toward the physical features that are common racially within the Eastern Asian countries.. Such as China, Japan, the Koreas, and everything around them..

That makes absolutely no sense. There are black people who live in the United States, yet they are "North American". Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, South America, etc. are just land boundaries. They say nothing about a person's ethnicity. There are Chinese people who were born in the USA who are NOT Asian. They would be North American. Their ethnicity is Chinese. And their race is Mongoloid.

There are Japanese people who were born in Brazil. This means that they are South American, their nationality is Brazilian, their ethnicity is Japanese, and their race is Mongoloid.

My ancestors were from France and Germany... but I'm not European. I was born in the USA, so therefore I am North American, my nationality is American, my ethnicity is
