People say that you should have a balanced diet and get all the vegetables and stuff in there. But now that we have vitamins I don't really see why you should need to have a good diet like that, unless you aren't active.

I take a multivitamin, because I no for a fact I don't consume my daily zinc daily, as well as a few others that I considered "exotic" the ones that aren't A-D.

I don't take mutli vitamins. They're almost completely worthless.

Why do you think they're worthless?
Your body doesn't absorb the nutrients as well as if you get it from food. If you replace one of your unhealthy side dishes with a solid vegitable or fruit for 2 meals a day, you'll get all of teh vitamins you need.
Eating healthy isn't not has hard or as expensive as people may think. The trick is to stay away from processed foods as much as possible. That's the hard part.

If you take the vitamin around the same time as a meal, doesn't the body then absorb it just fine?

Your body can't absorb more than 100% of any vitiman first off so all those 400-600%ers you see on the bottle are just a waste. Second, your body can't even absorb close to 100% all in one shot. You just end up peeing most of what you just took.[QUOTE="Wasdie"]

You take vitamins with meals so the iron doesn't destroy your stomach (if you take one with iron).[QUOTE="Wasdie"]

It's a bit better yes, but it's still not the same.
Really, taking a vitamin gives you a mental excuse to eat like crap. By replacing one snack a day with a fruit or a vegetable or changing out a side dish with the same thing, you lower your calorie intake and increase vitamins. Vitamins are great for your immune system and chemical balance, but if you're eating fatty foods with lots of cholesterol all of the time, you're still doing a lot of damage.

The reason the vitamins are 100+(B/C comes to mind), is because those vitamins are water soluble, and what is your body made out of?You should research this subject.People say that you should have a balanced diet and get all the vegetables and stuff in there. Obviously the best course of action is to obtain micronutrients through the diet, but some may not have access to certain foods, when this is the case vitamins are a viable (possibly less effective) alternative.
There are some specific types of diets which are lacking in certain micronutrients, vegans and iron/omega fatty acid levels come to mind immediately. Generally it's pretty hard to become vitamin/mineral deficient (depending on the micronutrient), though when someone is showing symptoms it can be interpreted as something else/covered up.
