Have you ever written or have you ever wanted to write your own stories, like as a book or novel or novella?

I am currently in the process of writing a fan-fiction novella set in the Fallout universe, and I am pretty confident in it. I have been working on it for the past week or so, and I am certainly going to see it through to the end.

I also hope to write a fan-fiction set in the Elder Scrolls universe at some point in the future as well.

Of course, I have not forgotten about original content. I am using fan-fictions as practice for the real thing. I have a few different ideas that are completely of my own that I want to make real after my fan-fictions are out of the way. I do not want to disclose those ideas in detail as they are my own for the time being.

So OT, do you write, or have you wanted to write? If so, then what? Why?

Nah I'm more of a reader than a writer.I ain't written anything of my own since the golden days of school ,when the teacher would give us a silly subject to write a composition.

Only articles and reviews, stuff of that nature. Never any fiction and certainly not fan fiction lol.

Last piece of that sweet sweet fiction that I wrote was back in high school. And if I was the teacher reading that paper, lord, I'd tell them parents to send me to counseling. Seriously, Corndog of Courage, Mustard Mayhem, Ketchup of Fury. I sound like the Obese Superfriends.

My creativity lies in music only.

I give authors a lot of credit. To make a story up and have it be interesting to a casual reader is an amazing feat.

I am probably about to make an unfair assumption here lol .... but, I take that statement to mean that you think fanfiction is solely meant to be made up of weird sexual pairings or something? haha cuz trust me, it's not :P

I've written quite a bit, I just never finish. lol.

I find the beginning of civilization a great era to write fiction in, like the first cities and such. And I'm not necessarily talking about actual history on Earth, but the beginnings of civilization in a fictional realm. Low fantasy, if you will, without real magic (though there is perceived magic). I try to stay away from the 'hero' stuff, too, and bend more toward the complications of early society itself.

As for fan fiction, it's fine to be influenced by existing works and incorporate it into your own, but to wholly write within that cannon I believe is selling yourself short and avoiding the complexities of filling out your own world. But to each his own.

I am actively in the process of writing a four part series of novels entitled Gun-Smoke: The Maelstrom. It is set in a universe that I (along with a team of about three collaborators) created over the course of four or five years, down to drawing out charts and maps and creating fictional governmental structures/systems, flora and fauna, and a complex origin story/lore for the whole thing.

It's basically going to be character-driven sci-fi (though you could say it has many elements of a western as well) with a heavy focus on the politics of the world in which the story takes place.

However, given that real life and responsibilities outside of writing come into play, there's no telling how long it will be before even the first novel is realized in tangible form.

I love making Low-Fantasy worlds (I cannot hardly stand most High-Fantasy), but the biggest challenge is coming up with all the lore and whatnot. It gets tedious for me quite quickly. The process repeats every few weeks lol .

As for what you said about fanfictions, here is the deal with me: I write them for two reaosns:

#1: I really like a particular story told in a video game, but I want to retell it in my own vision, with more detail and depth.

#2: As writing practice, so that when I finally do move on to my own original ideas, it's not total ass.

Here's the thing: a lot of beginning authors try to force-feed lore to the reader. This isn't necessary...you don't need to give the reader any more lore than is important to the characters. If the characters never have interaction with this faction or that, then there's no real need to even mention them.

An important part of writing is cutting the fluff and keeping the story as simple as possible. That's one of the jobs of a good editor, but it begins with the author.

Yep, have a few courses to go to get my degree in Creative Writing with an Emphasis in Fiction from UCLA. I attend off and on due to the fact that I have to pay out of pocket. Currently writing a fantasy based speculative fiction novel. If you're quite interested, I have about six chapters up at piecesofallie.wordpress.com. I really need to get back to adding more up there.

I love to write. I'm currently writing a mystery novel set in an alternate history of the 1920's where steampunk and the supernatural jive with flappers, gangsters, and jazz. My goal is to finish writing it by the end of October, get it edited and revised in the months after that and self publish the book next year. I'm been hard at work writing this novel since the start of the year and I'm more than halfway done (I'm shooting to get the word count between 80k-100k which would make it between 320-400 pages). And once that's all said and done, I have plans to write another book (maybe I write one book a year?), either a sequel to this one or something else entirely. Should be fun. :D

That sounds awesome :D I wish you luck!

I don't actually know how to get a book published. Where do you go? How much does it cost?

I've been writing since 1990, most of my work is currently on Deviant Art under the name of ReinaHW. My main work is a series called Reality Of Fate: Beaumont about a Scottish woman from another universe who is forced into long life against her will and is struggling to find a purpose to existing when she was supposed to die.

Yeah I write occasionally. It started as a hobby a few years ago, but now I'm thinking I want to make a career out of writing like being a sports writer, or possibly a game writer.

Thank you. :)

Keep in mind, I'm not an expert at publishing, I'm learning as I go, but here's what I've found. You can self publish for next to nothing. Make a electronic copy and upload it to a storefront online. However, you want to get an ISBN code. If fact it's required for some places like Amazon. I think a single code it will cost around $100 or you can get a batch of 10 for $300. Getting the batch is best because you need a unique code for each version you intend to sell (Kindle, epub, trade paperback, mass market paperback, hardcover etc). Once you got that, you can self publish electronically. It does help to pay extra for cover art, layout and design, editing, copyright and trademarks if needed, and so on.

For an actual print run, you're going to need some cash money, a couple grand at least, and that's the bare minimum IMO. There's a lot to consider and it can be daunting. I'm still working out the logistics on my endeavors. My advise is to search online for self publishing, print on demand, and absorb as much info as you can. Good luck on your writing too. :)

I write stories in my spare time, not so much now with school and work being my main focus. Yet even when I have free time, I just want to relax. I've been meaning to get back to it.

I thought about writing a science fiction novel once and realized it's much more difficult transferring the story from my head into an actual readable book. Safe to say I didn't get very far.

@ferrari2001: Please explain that sig, I have been wondering about it for weeks.

Why does she look like whoever she is talking to said something supportive or comforting, but then she suddenly looked like she was thinking "Uhhh wtf are you doing?"

That is Milana Vayntrub. Best known now as the AT&T girl. She used to do work in short comedy skit, mostly for funny or die skits. It's just a simple screen grab somebody took off one of those skits and I found it as I was browsing through various pictures, I thought the .gif was rather funny, plus it featured Milana so I decided to use it. I was getting tired up my old one.

I have a ton of ideas roaming around my head constantly, both original and fan-fiction. Though, I've never got the urge to write and when I do write, it's not pretty and self-critical myself to the point where I just scrap the whole idea. This goes for anything a write, including essays, research papers, blogs, and even some forum post. Hopefully over time I will learn to past that self critical stage and be happy with what I wrote.

I wrote a short sci-fi story a while back, but that's about it. It needs a lot of rewriting, because I have difficulty taking what's in my head and putting it down on paper.

I used to write short stories when I was younger.
