I feel like I am a ****ing god when it comes to this. I have these crazy riffs in my head and they seem so freaking epic. But I'm wondering is this just how everyone is ? Are alot of musicians that way where they feel like they have godly abilities at writing music ?

I don't know music theory. Their just complex, chaotic notes in my head. But I am going to start trying to learn music theory soon.

Sometimes when I dream, I hear some of the most beautiful music. Too bad I can't write music or remember it when I wake up.

Good. You don't need a complex understanding of theory to transcribe, but you will need to understand staff notation, rhythm, and other fundamentals. Also don't be surprised if your initial attempts to transcribe what you hear in your head prove completely unsuccessful. Composition is intellectually demanding, and the work can be incredibly frustrating and tedious. But the end product is worth it, so stick with it, and eventually you'll develop the ability to bring your thoughts into a tangible form that other people can appreciate.

You know, you can learn an instrument, and at least forge a part of your soul into a piece of music. Maybe a piece of a whole song? It's what I do, and I can't even read music. Yet I created two songs so far. Over a span of like a year. This sh*t's hard, man.

Yes I do, well awesome to me anyway, though now days it just frustrates me because I still can't convince myself to start playing it again. I should do that.

Yeah i do. and im working on my bass guitar ability to match up with what plays in my head. if you were smart... you'd do the same (not a bass, whatever instrument you hear in your head.) It takes time, but in the end it'll be worth it.

Most people can hummm their own tune. The problem is, most of us cannot write it down.magicalclick
But I am like obsessed this way. I am always doing crazy complex music in my head. I will prance around town like a mad man with all this crazy complex music in my head. People who see me probably think I'm a little crazy.

I know. My guitar teacher was telling me it is a hard grueling process. But hopefully he can help me learn. Anyway I really don't want to learn anything about music theory necessarily. I just want to be able to play what is in my head as closely as I can.

it almost always starts in my head

god awful / no sunlight (industrial / metal)

the dichotomy of loss (c1asscal / piano / orchestra)

i agree with pianist, you don't need a ton of theory knowledge, i think ear training and interval recognition are the 2 biggest things to transcribing and being able to put down what you hear in your head. it takes a while and i think the best musicians are often the ones that listen more than play.

You may actually find theory enjoyable. I teach it at college, and a lot of my students genuinely enjoy it. And the ability to notate music is better than the ability to simply play it back, unless you have a photographic memory and remember absolutely every detail about every single piece you compose.

Ya I see what your saying. And no I would not ever remember the music. It's gone it like 2 minutes. But that's mostly because I'm always writing new stuff in my head.

I do but I imagine that goes for most musicians. Does kind of suck when you come up with something and you forget it before you write it down though. I guess if you're able to forget it that easily though it's probably nothing amazing. I spend more time editing existing songs in my head these days.

You'll probably find you can remember it better when you start thinking of it both as sound and as notation. It gives you another way to think about it, and it's easier to hang onto the inspiration. That ability develops with experience.

I have, in the past, tried to adapt a song in my head to my guitar and tabbed out the result. Let's just say they don't quite match up :P

I do this ALL this time, Im learning guitar now though so hopefully I can translate some stuff in my head to actual written down songs. All I can do at the moment is sort of think of chord progressions and play it after a bit of messing about.

But remembering stuff isn't that important to me. I like to keep making more and more stuff that fits that same theme. I don't find particular riffs to be that important. In fact being to focused on one riff almost sounds like a bad thing to me. But I don't know.

You can't just play the rhythm out? Rather, the pitch/notes should be irrelevant as the rhythm (or really beat) is played, regardless of the complexity of the song... or "riff". I mean... if you can play the guitar... just start playing what you (think) you hear. If a note is too low or high... move in the right direction. All you really need to know is when you move your hand closer to the body of the guitar, the note/pitch gets higher. I never understood people who say stuff like this.

Heh, I KNOW I can't compose awesome music in my head. I have zero understanding of how and why major and minor scales even work.....despite playing guitar for 10 months and gradually getting better at it. I just know I'm going to regret it in the long run after learning nothing but but physically playing it...
