People you know well won't say hello to you unless you say hello to them first? I find it very rude and awkward sometimes.

There's nothing rude about that. It's perfectly normal since you already know each other well. No need to try and interact.

Yeah I guess, now that I think about it. If I take the time to say hello, I'd appreciate it if the person acknowledged me. Of course I live in the South (Arkansas), and everyone says hello to everyone.
