I always forget about tipping at restaurants when I go to one. Mostly when im with friends. Although im now against tipping I still forget about the tipping aspect of sit down restaurants. All the times I went out with my friends to eat I dont remember tipping.

On a rare occasion im the one who reminds my family to tip but now I wont be doing that. If the family forgets to tip I wont say anything.

Do you ever forget about the tipping aspect of restaurants?

Did everything seem fine and dandy? I love that feeling of being care free and not tipping. The way it should be.

Now I will definetly remember since I made this thread but now that I researched the laws and such, I wont tip.

On a side not, I get offered tips as a cart pusher in Wal-Mart, so I know what its like to not to get tips. We cant accept tips. Kind of worse because carryouts makes me get behind on the carts.

Rarely I forget if I am really drunk. Most of the time if its a place I like I will go back there a few days later and apologize and tip better.

Yeah. Although tipping isn't as big of a thing here as in America.

I guess it depends where you are. I heard in Europe they don't expect tips. In Florida where I live its pretty much expected and frowned upon if you don't.

I only tip if I feel the service has been good, and usually something makes me not tip.

The wait staff is paid for their job, why would someone leave them more? Sometimes I'll tip if the waiter/waitress was nice, or if I'm in a group with someone being super obnoxious and rude.

I always tip unless it's bad service. Waiters make at least minimum wage though and if they aren't doing something worth more than minimum wage, I don't look bad on other people for not wanting to tip.

Although employees will get min wage, they would look bad to an employer if they come up short on tips consistently. Don't feel that I should punish the worker for the system that's in place. Other ways to get a point across. Plus I am in control of the additional price that would be attached.

How can you be against tipping knowing that many restaurants pay their staff a wage lower than the minimum and their hard work in gathering tips makes up the bulk of their income? I always tip when the service is decent/average or better.

I only tip for above average service. They're getting paid to do the bare minimum of their job. Unless i see a 6-7/10, I wont be tipping. Exceptions being rude people at my table.

I never forget, however when the waitress doesn't refill my drink, comes and gives me a box for my food after I've taken literally 3 bites instead of asking how my food is and when I have to ask another waitress for a refill AFTER flagging down my waitress and asking her.. and then hearing her get yelled at as she spends her time joking with other people in the kitchen instead of helping people.. then 10 minutes later I hear the same thing only for a different table.. the woman won't get a tip. Shame the Perkins near me tends to hire at least one incompetent idiot. I's the reason I rarely go there. I also hate when places have a space for a tip on the receipt when it's a walk in, get your food and sit down wherever to eat, or take away. Sorry, I'm not tipping you to ring my food through the register and thats it.. thats not a service. All retail jobs do that and the don't get tips.

Restaurants are required by law to pay their wait-staff a minimum wage. If your waitress is doing a sub-par job, consistently, and doesn't receive tips, she's going to get minimum wage. However if you were to tip her say $10, and it was the only tip she got for that two weeks, her employer would have to make up the difference until she's at minimum wage. Thus, if a waitress only makes say $100 in tips in two weeks, she's still only making minimum wage, you're just giving the owner's of the restaurant an extra $100 that would've gone to pay the waitress minimum wage.

That's a weird system America has. Here in Canada they get their agreed upon wage and tips are additional reward for hard work. I thought I had heard differently about the US.

Yeah, Canada has it much better. in America if minimum wage is $10 (i like easy math :P), and a waitress works 10 hours a week, she'll earn $200 every two weeks(with possibility for more). If she ends up making $150 in tips for that 2 weeks, the owners only have to give her $50. If she makes $300 in tips, she gets $300 and the owners dont have to pay her a wage. Now, if you have a horrible waitress, and you tip her, you're a.) Giving a horrible waitress the chance to make more than someone who does a minimum wage job with a bit of effort. b.) allowing the owners who allow the terrible waitress to continue doing her job badly, to save money on wages. I much prefer the thought of tips being extra for a superb job, or for putting up with your picky family members etc.

No I never forget to tip and I've only not tipped once and that was because the waitress said she'd be right back with the check and I had a bad case of diahria (this was at Olive Garden) I was trying to contain..and she took about 15 minutes to get back. also the bathrooms were out of order!

You should try visiting Gordon Ramsays 3 michelin star restaurant. It says on their site "A discretionary 12.5% service charge will be added to your bill". So.... Try that out I guess.... Or not... /rambling

All true except the owners still have to pay the minimum wage for service workers regardless of what the person makes in tips. $2.13 an hour I think? Also, it may be different from state to state and that junk is way too confusing for me to be interested enough to understand it. It is a completely backwards system that ends up rewarding the restaurant owners more than the wait staff.

Waiters aren't subject to the same minimum wage requirements as normal minimum wage employees, at least in America.  They are paid well below the $7.25 an hour.  That goes for any "tipped" profession because it's under the idea that they're going to be meeting that minimum wage requirement through their tips. Even if they don't (say, nobody tips them that night), most aren't versed enough in the law to make sure they're adequately compensated and most businsesses aren't going to go out of their way to make sure of it.  A quick look on the DOL website says tip workers make a minimum of $2.13 an hour.  That said, finer establishments don't necessarily work on tip as they pay their workers well.

Now to actually answer the question, no I never forget to tip.  I don't go out and eat at a sit down restaurant if I can't afford to add a tip.  Now, in theory I oppose tip jobs and believe everyone should be fairly compensated by the employer for their work and not by the customer.  In reality, I generally tip 20-25% if the service is good, if it is outstanding, I will often tip a fair amount more (some rare occasions I've tipped 100%).  However, if the service is poor, I will tip less.  And if it is exceptionally bad, I've only left pennies before.  Horribly petty, I know, but when your whole entire job revolves around how you serve someone and how it DIRECTLY affects your pay, well... expect to be compensated as such.  I'll cut slack in cases where it's super busy or they're new (you can generally tell) or things like that.  But if you're outright rude, walk by numerous times and don't refill my drink, take up my plate when I'm not done and don't even ask me, those are all just ways to lose a tip.  I understand people have bad days, but this is work - leave it at the door.  If you can't manage to do that, talk with your employer and let them know you can't deal with the public that day.  In a business like that, most will work with you simply because a crappy waiter means potential loss of business, comped meals, etc.

That 2.13/hr would be the minimum an establishment could pay them, while they're receiving tips. If they're not receiving tips(even if it's their own fault), the establishment is required to make up the difference until it's at the 7.25/Hr mark. Regardless, the waitress is making at least 7.25/hr, more if he/she does the job well and ends up with more through tips. If the waitress only averages $5/hr in tips, the establishment foots an additional 2.25. If the waitress is making 7.25/hr on tips alone, the establishment still has to pay 2.13/Hr on top of that. By tipping bad wait-staff, you're essentially just putting more money into the owner's pockets. Unless the waitress is good and usually breaks that 5.20/hr in tips, (meaning with the additional 2.13/hr she'd make 7.33 instead of 7.25/hr) she's going to be making 7.25/hr, and the owner's just pay her less per hour.
